Priorslee Lake: 06:20 – 09:26
Location

Telford sunrise: 07:26

7.0°C > 10.5°C. Started mainly clear with a little high cloud; then spells of low cloud, especially 08:30 > 10:10. Light SSW wind becoming moderate, even fresh. Cooler and fresher than of late. Very good visibility

(141st visit of the year)

Notes
- even fewer geese this morning: why?
- Shoveler gone
- 2 of the Tufted Duck flew off before dawn; then c.20 seen flying off W (to The Flash?) as I was about to leave
- Water Rail definitely heard this morning from the NW reedy area
- rather fewer gulls this morning and most of the large gulls flew over
- the early Wood Pigeon passage again comprised of small groups. Some very big groups (c.500 birds) means that totals are ‘best effort’. When low cloud arrived at 08:30 passage stopped
- 4 small groups of Starlings seen leaving different locations in the reeds: 2 more small groups overhead
- Cetti’s Warbler presently again: I heard it sing just twice this morning when it was back in the NW reeds
- I made an effort to track the Magpie roost dispersal this morning and I counted 53. Still a few leaves masking some of their movement as they leave the roost and perch up before setting off so safest to say >50
- a Blackbird sang briefly this morning: while both thrushes occasionally sing in the autumn / early winter I cannot ever recall hearing a blackbird do so
- passage of Fieldfare and Redwings again. At least 5 more Redwings feeding in bushes along Teece Drive
- 1 Meadow Pipit seen again
- 2 single Siskins heard over
and
- no moths on the lamps

Counts of birds flying over the lake (in addition to those on / around lake)
- 4 (1 group) Greylag Geese
- c.325 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 6 Feral Pigeons (2 groups)
- 1 Stock Dove
- >2500 Wood Pigeons (25 migrant groups)
- 2 Collared Doves
- 306 Jackdaws
- 5 Rooks only
- 1 Raven
- 17 Starlings (2 groups)
- 48 Fieldfare (5 groups)
- 19 Redwings (7 singles/small groups)
- 6 Pied Wagtails
- 2 Siskins

Birds seen leaving roosts around the lake
- >50 Magpies
- 43 Starlings (4 groups)
- 12 Redwings

The counts from the lake area
- 2 Mute Swans
- 7 (4♂) Gadwall
- 11 (6♂) Mallard
- 65 (34♂) Tufted Ducks
- 1 Grey Heron again
- 10 Great Crested Grebes
- 1 Water Rail
- 33 Moorhens again
- 242 Coots
- c.160 Black-headed Gulls (see notes)
- 37 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (see notes)
- 3 Herring Gulls

Today’s sunrise over the lake.

Difficult to count spread-out Wood Pigeon groups like this.

‘Only’ a Robin but one with a few feathers misplaced. Was plagued by a misting lens this morning hence the rather ‘soft focus’ effect even though the feathers are pin-sharp.

- the Pochard seem to have gone
- once again some Tufted Duck flew in (and probably some arrived just before I did – the c.20 leaving the lake as I was leaving)
- Coot numbers were my highest-ever count of adults here – larger numbers only when small juveniles present
- Kingfisher here yet again
- Siskin over

Birds noted flying over
- 4 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 1 Siskin

The counts from the water
- 2 + 3 Mute Swans

This 1st winter gull caught me eye as being somehow different. The photo shows while superficially like a Lesser Black-backed Gull the secondary coverts are too pale and suggests a Yellow-legged Gull. The pale head would support that view but remember that the low sun at this time of year can ‘burn out’ many markings and I remain to be convinced.

Here is a nice shot of the underside of a 1st winter Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Another strange gull: the primary coverts seem to be the palest area on what is otherwise a very dark wing, so dark that it cannot really be anything other than a 1st winter Lesser Black-backed Gull. Also rather odd is that the eye looks to have a pale iris whereas I would expect it to be dark on any large 1st winter gull: the bill is however all-dark, as it should be. Gulls remain a puzzle.

Not all adult Great Crested Grebes have completely lost their head-plumes: here one struggles to separate a fish [?species?] from the weed.

Priorslee Lake: 06:19 – 09:38
Location

Telford sunrise: 07:24

12.5°C > 14.0°C. Broken cloud at multiple layers with a few clear spells. Moderate/ fresh SSW wind. Very good visibility

Best and strangest sighting today was what seems to have been a leucistic Lesser Black-backed Gull (see photos for discussion)

(140th visit of the year)

Notes
- rather few geese this morning: why?
- even larger movement of gulls this morning
--- maximum count of Black-headed Gulls on the water was c.420. Again birds were moving to & fro from Ricoh
--- after several groups of large gulls flew over birds started to settle with at least 350 present before a car with a backfire – how unusual is that in these days of electronic ignition – put them all up. Some 10 minutes later there were c.450 back on the lake. I suspect most of these were new birds as the ‘albino’ type did not return and there were >20 Herring Gulls when there had been just 2 previously. Number continued to build reaching at least 850 though some others had already drifted away
- 1 Yellow-legged Gull at least in the throng
- the early Wood Pigeon passage again comprised of small groups. All the large parties (up to 200 in several groups) were in a narrow window between 08:20 and 08:45 with many of these apparently climbing out of local trees. This raises the question: why were there no birds c.20 miles away that would pass c.30 minutes later?
- small group of Rooks passed almost 30 minutes ahead of the Jackdaws: then much later another group of 12 birds, but these not on the usual flight lines
- 2 single Starlings seen leaving the reeds: 1 group and another single bird (in with a party of Wood Pigeons!) overhead
- Cetti’s Warbler vocal again: after noting yesterday that it was being faithful to a small clump of reeds between the two fishing platforms it had of course moved – to the S side
- brief burst from one of the Song Thrushes
- passage of Fieldfare and Redwings again. At least 8 more Redwings seen leaving trees around the lake
- 1 Meadow Pipit seen leaving the S side: 2 singles over
- 1 Siskin heard over: later 2 males seen with Goldfinches attacking the Alder cones
And
- no moths on the lamps again

- 1 Yellow-legged Gull

This morning’s sunrise over the lake, the red creeping under the usual ‘Telford hat’ of low cloud.

And in close-up.

The red soon faded away.

A male Siskin attacking Alder cones.

Just part of one migrant party of Wood Pigeons over the lake this morning. Try counting this lot in flight.

Er? well what is this gull. Startlingly white and suggesting perhaps Glaucous Gull (bill too large and head shape wrong for Iceland Gull). But it would be a very strange date for any of the ‘white-winged’ gulls – they are mid- / late-winter birds, even in to Spring. Not in Autumn. Well there are several things wrong with this. On an adult, which this appears to be, the mantle should be pale pearl-grey and only the wing-tips would contrast as pure white. And in winter plumage, which it should have acquired by now, there should be extensive brown streaking on the head and neck (note the characteristic extensive dark streaking on the adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls now in winter plumage). So I conclude this must be some form of leucistic gull and I would guess a Lesser Black-backed Gull – the head-shape and posture exactly matches the bird behind. There were only 2 Herring Gulls present among some 250 Lesser Black-backs at this time (leucistic – lacking melanin pigment in the feathers rather than albino – unable to produce any melanin which would result in a pink eye and pale bill. It would be most unusual for a true albino to reach adulthood as their poor eyesight would almost certainly lead to very early death).

In this view there appears to be some grey in the folded wing tips (though we cannot be absolutely certain it is not just shadow). One point we can note here is the variability of the length and depth of the bills on the adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls. While males are on average larger than females it seems odd that the thinner bills would be (rather than just appear to be) longer.

Probably the clearest photo I took. Soon afterwards a car back-fired and put them all up, but I was unable to keep tabs on this bird to get a flight shot.

Here we see an adult Herring Gull in with adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls. This individual shows extensive head streaking in winter plumage – after November the streaks tend to wear and become less noticeable.

The mantle tone on gulls depends on the strength and the angle of the light and can be hard to judge. Note how the 3rd bird from the front looks very dark, almost recalling Great Black-backed Gull. That species would always, even a female, look larger, show a more massive bill and an unstreaked head.

Here we have a good candidate for a Yellow-legged Gull. The mantle is darker than a typical Herring Gull and the head appears unstreaked. While Scandinavian race Herring Gulls (common winter visitors inland) have darker mantles than ’our’ birds they are typically larger with very prominent head markings. This bird seems the same size as the Lesser Black-backs. Note the rather square head-shape and heavy bill – both typical for Yellow-legged Gull. We cannot see the legs though!

Priorslee Lake: 06:20 – 09:36
Location

Telford sunrise: 07:21

14.5°C > 15.5°C. Started with scattered cloud below broken cloud with this usual Telford ‘hat’ of low cloud; more low cloud later a few light showers. Moderate/ fresh SW wind. Very good visibility

Only 01 July and 10 August have provided me with warmer starts at the lake this year – amazing. No doubt we will pay for all this warm weather later in the winter

Best sighting for me was the pair of Gadwall at The Flash. I do not have easily searchable logs for years before 2011 but as far as I can recall this is a new species for me at the site

(139th visit of the year)

Notes
- an additional drake Gadwall today
- the duck Shoveler that had been present for a week was missing yesterday: today there were two drakes new in
- the ‘brownhead’ Goosander was seen very low flying W: it may just have come off the water rather than being a fly-over
- largest movement of gulls so far this season
--- maximum count of Black-headed Gulls on the water was c.320. As usual birds were moving to & fro from Ricoh making reliable counts hard. But I suspect many more passed through as I noted a large party apparently flying off E before I took the count
--- several big groups of large gulls appeared to the E and many (but not all) of the birds in these groups stopped off for variable periods before moving on. This made it hard to know how many flew straight over and exactly how many different birds landed. Almost all were checked and only 4 Herring Gulls found amongst them
- the early Wood Pigeon passage comprised of small groups apparently unsure of where they were headed – some going E, some NE and some W. Later the bigger parties (up to 120 birds) were all heading S
- single significant Jackdaw group today was very low and well to the E; thereafter the same steady passage of small groups still passing after 09:00
- no Starlings seen leaving roosts in the reeds: 2 groups overhead
- Cetti’s Warbler vocal again and faithful to a small clump of reeds between the two fishing platforms
- very small passage of Fieldfare and Redwings today. At least 15 more Redwings seen in (and then leaving) trees around the lake. One of these groups also contained a Song Thrush
- 1 Meadow Pipit dropped in to the long grass in the SW area again; another (?) flew over

And
- no moths on the lamps despite the mild and cloudy night
- looked hard to see whether the warm weather tempted any bats to hunt: none seen

Counts of birds flying over the lake (in addition to those on / around lake)
- 88 (5 groups) Greylag Geese

Birds seen leaving roosts around the lake
- c.25 Magpies
- [no Starling]
- 5 Redwings
- 6 Greenfinches

The counts from the lake area
- 2 Mute Swans

- >450 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (see notes)
- 3 Herring Gulls

The ‘Telford hat’ of low cloud prevent this potentially interesting sunrise from spreading any further across the sky.

From the NW looking E with plenty of autumn tints.

One of the two drake Shoveler (with 3 Coots).

The other drake Shoveler (with 2 Coots and drake Tufted Duck).

Always a delight: a drake Gadwall shows off the fine vermiculations of the flanks and the delicate brown edges to the secondary coverts and the all-black bill and ‘stern’.

Here are 3 Gadwall and a drake Tufted Duck. 2 of the Gadwall are ducks: on one of these the white speculum is visible but they are best separated from duck Mallard by their smaller size and the very obvious orange edges to the bill. The drake is a bit of a puzzle as it should have an all-black bill and I can only assume it is a 1st winter bird that has yet to acquire full adult features (note also that is ‘blinking’ and showing the nictating membrane across the eye.

Here we see two drake Gadwall the closest of which does have the all black bill. A duck is sandwiched between them (and a drake Tufted Duck moulting out of eclipse and still showing some dusky tones to white flanks is just disappearing out of the shot).

These are Snowberries (from the shrub Symphoricarpus albus). They are very evident at the W end of the lake at the moment and more prolific than I recall from earlier years. I was asked yesterday whether the berries were poisonous – I quote the web “Although the berries contain an impressive array of toxins their white colour seems to discourage ingestion and the violent vomiting caused seems to limit absorption”. So don’t!

Priorslee Flash:  09:38 – 10:18
Location

(96th visit of the year)

Notes
- the cygnets now flying well – yet to work out how to turn at the end of the lake!
- in addition to the Gadwall a duck Teal has turned up again
- an additional Great Crested Grebe: another juvenile apparently
- best passage of large gulls over this season
- counted the Jackdaws over (for what it is worth: not so many as I recall yesterday)

Birds noted flying over
- 97 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 1 Herring Gull
- 20 Jackdaws
- 1 Redpoll

The counts from the water
- 2 + 3 Mute Swans
- 8 Greylag Geese
- 43 Canada Geese
- 1 all-white feral goose
- 1 (0♂) Common Teal
- 2 (1♂) Gadwall
- 30 (20♂) Mallard
- 26 (15♂) Tufted Duck
- 9 (0♂) Goosander
- 1 all-white feral duck
- 2 Herons
- 3 Great Crested Grebes: 2 immatures
- 4 Moorhens
- 22 Coots
- 27 Black-headed Gulls
- 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull again

A couple more Goosander shots to show their current plumage variations. This bird has rather indistinct marks around the face and with some white between the bill and the eye seems likely to be a 1st winter bird. The black tip to the bill is also rather indistinct.

This bird is a whole lot ‘smarter’ with a neat black bill-tip, clean white chin and no white in front of the eye – indeed it is a obviously darker than the previous bird. An adult.

These two are / have been preening. Note the grey breast on the nearer bird which makes it a 1st winter bird. Quite different from the clean white breast of the adult behind.

Another delightful drake Gadwall: but at The Flash this time.

The duck Teal spent most of its time with its head underwater: it came up for air and this was the best. The small size and rather grey-looking plumage are the clues here. What we can just make out is the pale edge to the tail which is slightly more extensive that shown by duck Gadwall, Mallard and Shoveler.

... this however is better in showing the green speculum which identifies.

A record shot to show the 3 cygnets going for a practice fly. Not mastered the turn as yet so they land at the end.

Great Crested Grebe of course. Most adults have lost their head plumes and most immatures have lost their juvenile head-stripes so ageing this species is currently quite hard. I suspect an immature might still show some dark toward the tip of the bill and that this is therefore an adult. But ...
