Priorslee Lake and The Flash

Priorslee Lake:  06:50 – 09:15
The Flash:  09:20 – 09:55

5.0°C > 7.0°C:  Medium/high overcast, scattered below, increasing throughout. Occasional rain after 07:45. Moderate / fresh S wind. Very good visibility.

Sunrise: 08:10 GMT

Priorslee Lake:  06:50 – 09:15

(281st visit of the year)

All counts best efforts in challenging conditions. The wind was bringing much road noise from the M54. It was a very dark morning – I really needed a spotlight to count the Coots, so didn’t try!

Bird notes from here:
- The fifth Mute Swan cygnet stayed well away from the others and was left to its own devices.
- A Woodcock seen flying over the W end at 07:30. Propelled by the wind it looked like it would overshoot the normal roosting area and disappear in to the Ricoh area.
- No gulls roosted with the first Black-headed Gulls arriving at 07:35
- Later 38 Black-headed Gulls were flying high W. Whether these birds had been at the lake earlier is hard to tell. While I logged c.240 arriving from the W none of these stayed any length of time, soon flying off E / SE.
- Jackdaws very late this morning, the first large group at 08:05
- Many more Rooks than logged recently.
- At least two Reed Buntings heard calling around the roost area but nothing seen in or leaving the swaying vegetation.
