I spent a happy(?) day volunteering with a Severn Trent maintenance team.
Some of us collected trash: six bin bags full of bottles, cans and worse was the tally.
Others in the team were improving the path along the South side, adding ballast to the muddiest parts and widening it by trimming back the Blackthorn. Passage of their equipment has sadly churned up some of the other areas. These should be dealt with soon. The muddiest parts of the North side path are also in their plans.
Within the next few weeks there will some thinning of trees in the wooded areas. The recent tree cutting has been to remove Ash trees badly affected by ash dieback.
We discussed plans to clear some of the area overgrown with willow-herb to try and create a wildflower area. This should be done before the end of March.
During the day I kept one eye on the lake and one ear out for bird calls. Nothing of note was seen or heard.
