2016 : The Year at Priorslee Lake

With fewer overseas trip I made rather more visits to the lake this year

Here is a summary of my 2016 sightings with some additions provided through this web site

As usual we will start with BIRDS

I added (feral) Black Swan, Barnacle Goose, Wood Warbler and Pied Flycatcher to my personal site list

The breeding Mute Swans did marginally better this year. They had four cygnets and one of these seems destined to fledge successfully. The low success rate may partly due to inbreeding – the pen is a daughter of the cob: and partly inexperience of the pen who is quite young

Autumn and early winter produced a run of daily sightings of dabbling ducks that seemed to be moving around – some of Wigeon, (Common) Teal, Gadwall and Shoveler were present most days

There were very few unusual duck sightings in the first winter period. A duck Goldeneye dropped in during January (another dropped in at the end of November). Best of the year was a 1st winter drake (Greater) Scaup that stayed for 10 days in early Winter. Goosanders were regular overhead, presumably en route to The Flash where over 40 have been seen some days. For whatever reason they usually only stop briefly at the lake

Apart from the annual passage in both Spring and Autumn of Common Sandpipers wader passage was minimal. A Curlew was seen over in Spring; and a (Common) Greenshank was present for a few hours in August. The lack of any muddy edges means this paucity is unlikely to change

Lapwings were noted one day on the SW grass. I have not seen this declining species actually at the lake for a number of year

The Little Ringed Plovers returned for their seventh year. A separate ‘tab’ on the web site is devoted to this species. The Oystercatchers didn’t try this year staying less than a week before moving on

I was present on 11 May when the weather conditions were perfect to bring large numbers of terns inland – easterly winds and drizzle. This resulted in simultaneous sightings for me of Common, Arctic and Black Terns. Later in the day others added both Little and Sandwich Terns to the list – five species of tern in one year is unprecedented, let alone on the same day

Last winter was notable for the lack of gulls. A few years ago it was not unusual to find >5000 gulls loafing on the water on winter afternoons. Last winter 500 was almost noteworthy. Part of the reason was probably the run-down and eventual closure of the nearby Granville rubbish tip (aka Recycling Centre). Replacement sites in the area are probably less easy for gulls to scavenge from. No doubt the lack of cold weather last Winter – the lake never had any significant amount of ice – also contributed as gulls seem to like to stand on the ice. I logged a lone ‘white winged’ gull from the Arctic and that was a very distant Iceland Gull that, on the view I had, was unlikely to have been accepted by the local rarities committee. Caspian Gulls were widely reported: I have difficulty confidently identifying this species so it is not on my list for this year

In spring I noted a record number of passing Kittiwakes – only seven but good for a small inland water. The first was on the rather early date of 08 March

Also early was the arrival of the hirundines with all three species – Sand Martin, Barn Swallow and, most unusually, House Martin all present on 27 March

Spring passage was not exceptional despite the addition of Wood Warbler and Pied Flycatcher. A single Grasshopper Warbler was heard on one morning. A Yellow Wagtail was seen on the SW grass – my first for many years, all my recent records being of birds heard flying over

All the usual warbler species likely bred this year – Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Garden Warbler, Common Whitethroat and Reed Warbler. Despite several singing birds I doubt either Willow Warbler or Sedge Warbler bred. The Cetti’s Warbler that had been present intermittently from October 2015, started to sing in mid-March and continued to do so before disappearing at the end of May, presumably having failed to attract a mate

On a less positive note what seemed to be the last lone male Willow Tit – a fast declining species – sang and sang and sang all around the lake for the second year apparently without finding a mate

A Spotted Flycatcher was seen around the Teece Drive houses. A Wheatear stopped on the dam. These were more or less the only passage on autumn

Last winter Siskins were around in higher numbers than in previous years. This winter looks like being just as good

Now we will do DAMSELFLIES and DRAGONFLIES. I know of no published ‘species order’ so we will only do them in date order of the first record. Rather a poor year with no Emperor Dragonfly or only one species of Hawker noted

INSECTS’ next. With many thousands of species in the UK this is not even scratching the surface of what is present and I many species-groups are very difficult to identify. I see now that I failed to record even the very common Garden Spider or any ant sps. With that proviso here is what I logged
