Priorslee Lake and The Flash [not in that order]

Priorslee Lake:  13:50 – 14:50
The Flash:  12:30 – 13:40

4.0°C > 5.0°C:  Cloudless and sunny. Light NNW wind. Very good visibility.

[Sunrise: 07:55 GMT]

Priorslee Lake:  13:50 – 14:50

(273rd visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- Four cygnets (blue Darvic rings 7JSI, 7JSL, 7JSN and 7JSP) with the Mute Swan adults. The other cygnet again well apart.
- Second pair of Gadwall now.
- I am logging the immature Herring Gulls as ‘Herring Gull-types’: I am sure there are some Yellow-legged Gulls amongst them but they were mostly too far away for me to be able to safely separate them.

Bird totals:

Birds noted flying over or flying near the lake:
- 1 Common Buzzard

Counts from the lake area:
- 2 + 5 Mute Swans (see notes)
- 4 (2♂) Gadwall
- 5 (3♂) Mallard
- 2 (2♂) Pochard
- 52 (24♂) Tufted Ducks
- 1 Cormorant: departed
- 2 Little Grebes
- 7 Great Crested Grebes again
- 8 Moorhens
- 133 Coots
- >150 Black-headed Gulls
- >150 Lesser Black-backed Gulls: mostly adults; some arriving all the while
- 7 (near) adult Herring Gulls
- >30 immature Herring Gull-types: mostly first-winters

A Common Buzzard takes a look at me as it sails past.

A male Pied Wagtail against a grassy background.

Here showing its other side.

The Flash:  12:30 – 13:40

(259th visit of the year)

Bird notes from here:
- why so (relatively) few duck Mallard today?

Birds noted flying over / near The Flash.
- 1 Lesser Black-backed Gulls: second? year

Counts from the water:
- 3 Mute Swans
- 7 Canada Geese
- 35 (22♂) Mallard
- 9 (8♂) Pochard
- 22 (9♂) Tufted Duck
- 9 (1♂) Goosanders
- 1 Grey Heron again
- 3 Great Crested Grebes again
- 6 Moorhen
- 13 Coots again
- 72 Black-headed Gulls
- 2 first-winter Herring Gull-types
- 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls: both adults again
- 1 Kingfisher

Other things:
- on a lamp pole in squirrel alley
- 1 Common European Earwig (Forficula auricularia)
- on the Ivy bank
        - 5 wasps, likely all Common Wasps (Vespula vulgaris)
        - 7 Spot Ladybirds (Coccinella 7-punctata)
        - very many flies of at least five species
- elsewhere
        - 1 Grey Squirrel

Food in the offing the other side of the lake and this duck Mallard noisily takes off ....

 ... with another ...

... and they move in to formation ...

... and head-off.

A fine-looking drake Pochard. Has a rather soggy-looking head from continual diving. This seems to have left so much water on its head and neck that it is reflecting the sun – I am sure there was no white plumage-flecking.

A drake and two brownhead Goosanders in the sun.

An adult winter Black-headed Gull lands next to a first-winter bird, illustrating the adult’s winter-plumage wing-pattern. Note the difference in bill colour between the two ages.

Another adult winter Black-headed Gull – note the legs of adults are as red as their bills.

And this is what the wings of a first-winter Black-headed Gull look like

What I think is a second-winter Herring Gull approaches – second-winter because there is extensive pale at the base of the bill.

And here is what I think is the same bird on the water. Extensive grey on the mantle.

And again.

And yet again – note especially that as the head is turned the size and shape of bill appears very different.

Here is our second-winter Herring Gull behind a first-winter Herring Gull – this younger bird shows much less grey on the mantle and a blacker bill.

Here is our second-winter Herring Gull compared with a first-winter Black-headed Gull

And again, the second-winter Herring Gull with an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull (this bird with less head-streaking than usual). A duck Pochard in the foreground.

A ‘record shot’ as the Kingfisher scoots away.

One of today’s two 7 Spot Ladybirds (Coccinella 7-punctata) (and my thumbnail).

One of today’s Common Wasps (Vespula vulgaris). Surprisingly hairy and also rather late in the year. Has managed to ride out the long spell of dull and wet weather.

And another Common Wasp. Here on Ivy that is well past its best for extraction of nectar.

Priorslee Lake, The Flash, Trench Lock Pool and Trench Middle Pool [not in that order]

Priorslee Lake:  12:40 – 13:10
The Flash:  11:55 – 12:35
Trench Lock Pool:  10:55 – 11:25
Trench Middle Pool:  10:25 –10:50 // 11:30 – 11:45

8.0°C:  Low cloud with occasional drizzle. Light N wind. Moderate visibility.

[Sunrise: 07:54 GMT]

Ahead of the promised afternoon rain and evening clearance a start at Trench which was just below the low clouds.

I hope that promised clearance and colder weather with a N wind will bring some change in the scene.

Priorslee Lake:  12:40 – 13:10

(272nd visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- Just two cygnets with the Mute Swan adults. Another cygnet was, as usual, keeping well-apart.
- Pochard and some of the additional Tufted Ducks from The Flash?
- Higher proportion of Herring Gulls today, mostly first-winter birds. I am sure that a few of these ought to have been Yellow-legged Gulls: I would need closer views of flying birds to separate at this age.

Bird totals:

Birds noted flying over or flying near the lake:
None

Counts from the lake area:
- 2 + 3 Mute Swans (see notes)
- 2 (1♂) Gadwall
- 3 (2♂) Mallard
- 6 (6♂) Pochard
- 57 (30♂) Tufted Ducks
- 2 Cormorants: one departed
- 1 Little Grebe again
- 7 Great Crested Grebes
- 7 Moorhens
- 137 Coots
- >170 Black-headed Gulls
- >160 Lesser Black-backed Gulls: mostly adults; few arriving
- >40 Herring Gulls: three adults; one 2nd winter; rest first-winters

In squirrel alley I found this group of fungus.

Here in close up. It looks like one of the Stereum species of ‘crust’, just possibly the very common Hairy Curtain Crust (Stereum hirsutum). It looks rather too yellow for that species and I am not sure about the ‘jelly-looking’ growths between the crusts. Are they still undeveloped fruiting bodies? Or a separate jelly-fungus?

(Ed Wilson)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Flash:  11:55 – 12:35

(258th visit of the year)

Bird notes from here:
- Some of the Pochard and Tufted Duck appear to have decamped to the main lake.
- I suspected three Great Crested Grebes yesterday but could never find all three at the same time. Certainly three today.
- The Sparrowhawk was flying around again, terrorising the tits in the trees.

Birds noted flying over / near The Flash.
None

Counts from the water:
- 3 Mute Swans
- 48 Canada Goose: 26 of these flew off in three groups
- 34 (18♂) Mallard
- 10 (8♂) Pochard
- 14 (5♂) Tufted Duck
- 2 (0♂) Goosander
- 1 Grey Heron: departed
- 3 Great Crested Grebes
- 5 Moorhen
- 13 Coots
- 64 Black-headed Gulls
- 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls: both adults

Other things:
- on a lamp pole
        - 1 Dicranopalpus ramosus harvestman
- elsewhere
        - new cluster of fungus, perhaps Hairy Curtain Crust (Stereum hirsutum)

(Ed Wilson)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trench Lock Pool:  10:55 – 11:25

(49th visit of the year)

This site continues to disappoint

Notes from here:
- One of the 101 Canada Geese had the white chin-strap extending to meet on the nape. It also had a small white patch on the forehead. Otherwise it looked like a regular Canada Goose.
- Further increase in Great Crested Grebe numbers: now eleven.
- Once again I ask: where are all the Coots? A few years ago there would be >100 here in late Autumn.

Birds noted flying over / near here [other than local Wood Pigeons and Jackdaws].
- 41 Starlings

Counts from the water:
- 1 Mute Swan
- 101 Canada Geese (see notes)
- 8 (6♂) Mallard again
- 2 (2♂) Goosanders
- 1 Little Grebe
- 11 Great Crested Grebes
- 1 Moorhen
- 4 Coots only
- 5 Black-headed Gulls
- 2 Lesser Black-backed Gull: both adults; both departed
- 1 Herring Gull: second-winter; departed

Here is the rather strange Canada Goose. The white on the chin-strap extends right on to the nape where there are additional pale marks down the neck ...

.. and head-on we see the white on the forehead. On the photo the white is more extensive than I noted at the time, with light blotching all over the crown. Otherwise it looks like a regular Canada Goose.

The only good thing about dull late Autumn days is that there is very ‘flat’ light. Too little of it to freeze the action on this drake Goosander but it shows the delicate pink suffusion acquired by drakes in breeding condition.

(Ed Wilson)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trench Middle Pool:  10:25 –10:50 // 11:30 – 11:45

(49th visit of the year)

The footpath along the N side embankment closed again and work continues. Recently a van ran down the steps at the W end of the N side and had to be retrieved from the water. Apparently unoccupied. Whether it was a workman’s van that ran away or a deliberate act is unclear.

Notes from here:
- The second Mute Swan would not come close-enough for me to read any ring
- 1 Grey Wagtail flew off as I arrived

Birds noted flying over / near here:
None

Counts from the water:
- 2 Mute Swans: one Blue 7JLE
- 22 Canada Geese
- 1 all-white feral Goose-type
- 15 (12♂) Mallard
- 11 (6♂) Tufted Duck
- 6 (3♂) Goosander
- 1 Grey Heron
- 2 Great Crested Grebes
- 13 Moorhens
- 35 Coots
- 31 Black-headed Gulls
- 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull: 1 adult
- 2 Herring Gulls: 1 adult; 1 first winter
- 1 possible first-winter Yellow-legged Gull

Two large gulls. The adult on the left is a Herring Gull, albeit with rather unusual dark area around the eye. The first-winter on the right is a bit more of a puzzle. At the time I thought Herring Gull. Examining the photo in more detail the combination of all-black bill, extensive white fringes to the feathers on the back; rather dark base of the hind neck and mostly uniform tertials (only two show slight white notches) are more characteristic of Yellow-legged Gull. I would have liked to see the bird fly before making a definitive call.

You try better on a dull Autumn day with an active Long-tailed Tit! I was quite pleased with what the camera (and Photoshop) manage to extract.

Priorslee Lake and The Flash

Priorslee Lake:  11:45 –12:30
The Flash:  10:50 – 11:40

8.0°C > 9.0°C:  Low cloud with occasional light rain. Light NNE wind. Moderate visibility.

[Sunrise: 07:52 GMT]

Finally got bored with all the grey skies and went to see what I could find: very little

Priorslee Lake:  11:45 –12:30

(271st visit of the year)

The Model Boat Club active at the W end. Most birds seem to ignore them, though the Moorhens were not on the grass and could not be located.

Other bird notes:
- Nothing to highlight: usual steady arrival of large gulls.

Bird totals:

Birds noted flying over or flying near the lake:
None

Counts from the lake area:
- 2 + 4 Mute Swans
- 2 (1♂) Gadwall remain
- 5 (3♂) Mallard
- 32 (13♂) Tufted Ducks
- 1 (0♂) Goosander
- 1 Cormorant: departed
- 1 Little Grebes
- 6 Great Crested Grebes remain
- no Moorhens
- 127 Coots
- >180 Black-headed Gulls
- c.125 Lesser Black-backed Gulls: mostly adults; most arrived
- c.15 Herring Gulls again: one adult; one 2nd winter; rest first-winters

This gull is a pit-fall for the unwary. The bill marking suggests a Ring-billed Gull and that North American wandered has a very similar mantle colour to this third-winter Herring Gull. We can dismiss the Ring-billed Gull option because the ‘ring bill’ is only evident on adult Ring-billed Gulls and this bird has brown in the folded wing indicating it is an immature. A Ring-billed Gull would be smaller and in winter would show extensive head spotting with an even heavier necklace of spots around the hind-neck. As with all gulls the full set of features needs to be checked. Since it was first identified here in 2012 a most unusual hybrid Ring-billed x Lesser Black-backed Gull has visited most winters. It has been seen at nearby Belvide for the last few days.

The Flash:  10:50 – 11:40

(257th visit of the year)

Bird notes from here:
- The Canada Geese ‘appeared’: I assumed they flew in.
- Another good count of Pochard: perhaps additions from the lake?
- Eight (six drakes) of the Tufted Duck flew in – disturbed from the lake by the Model Boat Club? Still an unusually low count for this date.
- Group of five Bullfinches flying around the trees at the top end noteworthy.

Birds noted flying over / near The Flash:
- 1 Sparrowhawk
- 4 Feral Pigeons
- 1 Stock Dove
- 2 Starlings

Counts from the water: quiet again.
- 3 Mute Swans remain
- 2 Canada Goose: arrived?
- 35 (19♂) Mallard
- 14 (12♂) Pochard
- 20 (12♂) Tufted Duck
- 24 (5♂) Goosander
- 2 Great Crested Grebes
- 1 Moorhen
- 15 Coots
- 46 Black-headed Gulls
- 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls: one adult; one first-winter

Other things:
- on a lamp pole

Priorslee Lake and The Flash

Priorslee Lake:  11:25 –13:00
The Flash:  10:20 – 11:20

7.0°C:  Mostly cloudy. Some rain c.11:15. Light ESE wind. Good visibility.

[Sunrise: 07:44 GMT]

I had intended to make an afternoon visit today. The weather forecast suggested otherwise and I escaped the worst of the rain.

Priorslee Lake:  11:25 –13:00

(270th visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- The two adult and four of the Mute Swan cygnets have Darvic rings confirming they are the breeding group returned from their air-tests at the start of the month. The ring on the fifth cygnet could not be read but it must be the reluctant flyer born here: any other bird would not be tolerated by the resident cob.
- Throughout small groups of large gulls, mainly adult Lesser Black-backs, flew from the N with many stopping off to bathe, drink and loaf for a while. Some carried on overhead without stopping.
- Up to eight first-winter Herring Gulls seemed to be a more permanent fixture.
- What was presumably the same first-winter Caspian Gull – white head; jet-black bill – was present again for at least part of the time.

Bird totals:

Birds noted flying over or flying near the lake:
- c.35 Lesser Black-backed Gulls

Counts from the lake area:
- 2 + 5 Mute Swans again
- 2 (1♂) Gadwall again
- 9 (6♂) Mallard
- 3 (2♂) Pochard
- 37 (20♂) Tufted Ducks
- 1 (0♂) Goosander: arrived
- 2 Cormorants: one out; one in
- 2 Little Grebes again
- 6 Great Crested Grebes
- 4 Moorhens
- [Coots not counted]
- c.110 Black-headed Gulls again
- c.225 Lesser Black-backed Gulls: mostly adults; most stopped off
- c.15 Herring Gulls: few adults
- 1 Caspian Gull: first winter; arrived?

This duck Goosander dropped in – I saw it in flight and can therefore confirm from the wing-pattern that it was not an immature drake still with a brown head.

The Goosander proceeded to paddle off in to the middle distance but I was just about able to take a poor ‘compare and contrast’ shot between it and a Great Crested Grebe.

Here is an instructive trio of gulls. In front a first-winter Herring Gull. Behind it the first-winter Caspian Gull, the bird seen here on and off for several weeks. And at the back an adult winter Lesser Black-backed Gull. The typical first-winter Caspian Gull features of clean white head and all jet black bill are well seen. Here the bird is clearly a lot larger than the Herring Gull. This is not a reliable identification feature as male Herring Gulls are typically larger than females and ‘northern race’ birds (winter visitors here) are typically larger than ‘our’ Herring Gulls. I would suspect the Herring Gull is a southern race female.

Here is the same first winter Caspian Gull compared with an adult winter Lesser Black-backed Gull. It does not look so large yet a typical Lesser Black-backed Gull is smaller than a typical Herring Gull. Perhaps this is a male Lesser Black-back. The bird stretching its wings behind is another adult winter Lesser Black-backed Gull. All the bird books tell you this species has proportionately longer and narrower wings than a Herring Gull – a feature I have found to be no use whatsoever in the field!

Another instructive photo. Bottom left and top right are adult winter Lesser Black-backed Gulls, the bird on the right showing less head-streaking. The bird at the top left is a typical adult winter Herring Gull. But what about the bird at the bottom right? The mantle is clearly darker. There are brown feathers evident in the folded tertials suggesting this is a second-winter bird. Is it a ‘northern race’ Herring Gull? Or could it be a Yellow-legged Gull? My vote would be the former as the bill seems too long and narrow for the latter species which would also typically show a squarer head profile.

The Flash:  10:20 – 11:20

(256th visit of the year)

Bird notes from here:
- 9 Pochard a good count – all drakes too.

Birds noted flying over / near The Flash:
- 6 Lesser Black-backed Gulls

Counts from the water: quiet again.
- 3 Mute Swans
- 14 Greylag Geese: departed
- 2 Canada Goose
- 29 (15♂) Mallard
- 9 (9♂) Pochard
- 37 (>16♂) Tufted Duck
- 1 Great Crested Grebe again
- 3 Moorhens
- 9 Coots again
- 66 Black-headed Gulls
- 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls: all briefly: two adults; one second winter
- 1 Herring Gulls: both briefly: first winters
- 1 Yellow-legged Gull: first winter flew off
- 1 Kingfisher again

Other things:
- on the usual lamp pole
        - 1 Dicranopalpus ramosus harvestman
- elsewhere
        - 1 Grey Squirrel

A photo of what I assumed was a first-winter Herring Gull cruising by, leaving the water.

As it passed then several things not quite right. The very well-defined tail band and clean-looking upper tail is quite different from the typical smudgy tail band a spotted upper tail of a first-winter Herring Gull. And only four, perhaps five, of the inner primaries are paler

Another ‘going away’ view shows the inner wing coverts to have some barring. These features point the bird being a first-winter Yellow-legged Gull.

This first-winter Herring Gull was at the lake but is included here for comparison. Note the more extensive and obvious pale inner primaries typical of this species at this age.
