Priorslee Lake and The Flash

3.0°C > 4.0°C: Low overcast. Light SE wind. Moderate visibility

[Sunrise: 07:57 GMT]

* = a photo from today.

Priorslee Lake: 10:15 – 11:15

(244th visit of the year)

Viewing from the Castle Farm Way lay-by and dam-top only

Bird notes:
- A steady trickle of Lesser Black-backed Gulls dropped in to bathe and drink before carrying on.
- Two Pied Wagtails in the Castle Farm Way lay-by were just about the only other birds I noted.

Counts from the lake area:
- *2 Canada Geese
- 2 + 4 (1 brood) Mute Swans
- 5 (3♂) Gadwall still
- 7 (6♂) Mallard
- 2 (1♂) Common Teal still
- 4 (2♂) Pochard
- 99 (42♂) Tufted Duck
- 12 Moorhens
- 186 Coots
- 2 Great Crested Grebes still
- *37 Black-headed Gulls
- 4 Herring Gulls
- *44 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 1 Cormorant

Later.
Nothing noted

Dull conditions are not conducive to great photography. Someone arrived with bread for the birds and I was tempted to at least try a few shots. The Canada Geese were quick to spot the opportunity of food and here is one arriving. Not enough light to 'freeze' many of the photos I am afraid.

Black-headed Gulls were also soon on the case. All of them were adult winter-plumaged birds though this one shows rather more black on the head than is typical at this date.

The heads of these two are more typically marked for this date.

As are these two.

Some second winter birds might show dark spots at the ends of the outer tail feathers. Nothing to see here.

Nor here. The nearer bird does not have black tips to the tail – it is the wing-tip of the bird behind it.

Another typical adult winter bird.

Whereas this individual seems to be coming in to breeding plumage rather early. Or is it moulting out in to pale-headed winter plumage rather late?

A classic first winter Lesser Black-backed Gull briefly joined the fray. Note the almost uniformly dark back and wings; the all-dark tail separated from the almost unmarked upper-tail by a clean crescent shape.

Another view of the same bird showing the all dark bill and head-streaking which is especially pronounced around the eye.

Priorslee Lake and The Flash

6.0°C: Very low cloud / mist. Light SE wind. Poor / very poor visibility. A very few brighter spells after 08:15

Sunrise: 07:54 GMT

* = a photo from today.

All numbers affected by the poor visibility.

Priorslee Lake: 06:28 – 09:10

(243rd visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- Tufted Duck count is 'best effort'. I suspect there were even more though some of the birds were very mobile and hard to keep track of.
- At least 400 Black-headed Gulls noted well before dawn. Large number were seen leaving to and arriving from the West were presumably these birds moving around.
- Further investigation suggests I was mistaken yesterday in thinking I had heard a Jackdaw calling from the Magpie roost area. Today it seemed likely that one of the Magpies was intermittently making the noise.
- A Mistle Thrush flew in from far to the West before starting to sing from the Ricoh copse. This suggests that it was probably the same bird I heard and saw at The Flash yesterday.

Birds noted flying over here:
- 2 Canada Geese: circled over
- 1 Feral Pigeon again: an all-white bird today
- 15 Wood Pigeons
- 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull
- no Jackdaws
- 1 Rook
- 8 Fieldfare: one group
- 1 Redwing
- 1 Pied Wagtail

Warblers noted:
- 1 Cetti's Warbler: very vocal before dawn

Birds noted leaving roosts around the lake:
- 1 Fieldfare
- 11 Redwings
- Reed Buntings heard only

Counts from the lake area:
- 11 Canada Geese: six of these arrived as three duos
- 2 + 4 (1 brood) Mute Swans
- 5 (3♂) Gadwall again
- 7 (4♂) Mallard
- 2 (1) Common Teal again
- no Pochard
- 97 (51♂) Tufted Duck: see notes
- 1 Water Rail
- 14 Moorhens again
- Coots not counted due to poor visibility
- 2 Great Crested Grebes again
- >400 Black-headed Gulls
- 3 Herring Gulls
- 7 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 3 Cormorants
- 1 Kingfisher

Noted on / around the street lamp poles pre-dawn:
- *1 November Moth-type (Epirrita sp.)
- *1 unidentified larva, presumed a sawfly
- *1 springtail, perhaps Dicyrtomina minuta
- *1 possible harvestman Mitostoma chrysomelas

Later.
Nothing noted

Not much to show you from a very misty morning. All the images are flash photos taken pre-dawn at the lake. This a November Moth-type (Epirrita sp.), unhelpfully at the very top of a street lamp pole. It is just about the end of the flight season for this group of moths and the Autumnal Moth (E. autumnata) is usually the last of the group to be recorded. Specific identification is not possible from photos.

The three pairs of prolegs suggest this is a sawfly larva though I cannot determine which species it might be.

My best attempt to date at photographing one of these tiny rotund springtails. The barring at the rear of the abdomen suggests it is probably Dicyrtomina minuta which, despite its scientific name, is not the smallest insect in the group.

I first saw and photographed this on 16 October and it is still there in apparently the exactly same place on the same street lamp pole. I think it is a harvestman Mitostoma chrysomelas though whether it is alive or not....

The Flash: 09:13 – 09:55

(236th visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- The non-flying Canada Goose with 'angel wing' deformity was noted for the first time in several days. It must have been hiding inside the island.
- The number of Cormorants and Grey Herons (at least) is likely to be under-recorded as it was not possible to see the island clearly (or even at all sometimes!)

Birds noted flying over here:
- 1 Jackdaw

Noted on / around the water
- 3 Canada Geese
- 2 + 4 (1 brood) Mute Swans
- 53 (33♂) Mallard
- 1 all-white duck (Peking(?) Duck)
- 15 (7♂) Tufted Duck
- 7 (0♂) Goosander
- 15 Moorhens again
- 32 Coots
- 2 Great Crested Grebes again
- 18 Black-headed Gulls
- 3 Cormorants
- 1 Grey Heron

Noted on / around the street lamp poles:
- 1 November Moth-type (Epirrita sp.): different place on the same street lamp pole as yesterday.

Later around the Ivy bank:
Nothing noted

Priorslee Lake and The Flash

8.0°C: Medium / high overcast. Almost calm. Good visibility: rather hazy.

Sunrise: 07:52 GMT

* = a photo from today.

The mild conditions provoked some song. Four Song Thrushes were heard singing around the lake with two more at The Flash. More unusually a Mistle Thrush was singing from the Ricoh copse near the lake and *it, or another, was singing along the East side of The Flash. This is perhaps my earliest-ever song from this species.

Priorslee Lake: 06:44 – 09:08

(242nd visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- A male Pheasant called once from the north-east area pre-dawn.
- Light-levels were rather too low for an accurate Coot count and my total is likely understated.
- In with what seems to be a much smaller than usual (but uncounted) Magpies roost I heard what sounded like a Jackdaw calling from the same trees. I cannot recall noting Jackdaws roosting around the lake.
- Today I spent the early part of my visit along the North side. This accounts for the higher than usual number of Redwings logged leaving roosts; and also for the smaller number of Reed Buntings seen – they had likely mostly departed before I was near their roost site at the West end. I may also have been ill-positioned to see any Starling roost departure.

Birds noted flying over here:
- 1 Feral Pigeon
- 2 Stock Doves: together
- 22 Wood Pigeons
- 2 Black-headed Gulls
- 1 Herring Gull
- 29 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 20 unidentified large gulls: pre-dawn
- 7 Jackdaws
- 1 Rook
- 32 Fieldfare: two groups
- 47 Redwings: four groups
- no Pied Wagtail
- 2 Siskins

Warblers noted:
- 1 Cetti's Warbler: calls and song

- 2 Reed Buntings: see notes

- 14 Moorhens
- 164 Coots at least: see notes
- 2 Great Crested Grebes
- >130 Black-headed Gulls
- 7 Herring Gulls
- 19 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 5 unidentified large gulls: pre-dawn
- 2 Cormorants: arrived separately

Noted on / around the street lamp poles pre-dawn:
- *1 Winter Moth (Operophtera brumata)
- *1 small fly with dark wing-tips
- 1 springtail Dicyrtomina sp.
- *1 Nursery Web Spider (Pisaura mirabilis)
- 1 stretch spider Tetragnatha sp.
- *1 unidentified spider

Noted later.
- Grey Squirrels

My first Winter Moth (Operophtera brumata) moth of the season. Not my first to be seen in 2022 as there were several flying in January.

There are still a few of these small flies with dark wing-tips.

I am sure I ought to be able to identify this rather dramatic-looking spider.

One spider that is easy-enough to identify is this Nursery Web Spider (Pisaura mirabilis). The 'blunt-faced' look and the way the front two pairs of legs are held together provide the clues. Not all specimens have such a clear orange stripe down the abdomen.

The Flash: 09:11 – 09:59

(235th visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- Two Goldcrests were chasing around in the Ivy bank which in the overcast conditions was devoid of any insects: not even a fly.

Birds noted flying over here:
None

Noted on / around the water
- 7 Canada Geese: four of these arrived
- 2 + 4 (1 brood) Mute Swans
- 50 (31♂) Mallard

- 4 (1♂) Goosander
- 15 Moorhens
- 35 Coots
- 2 Great Crested Grebes
- 28 Black-headed Gulls
- 7 Cormorants
- 2 Grey Heron

Noted on / around the street lamp poles:
- *1 November Moth-type (Epirrita sp.)
- *1 stretch spider Tetragnatha sp.

Later around the Ivy bank:
Nothing noted

Not one of my best photos but it is just about possible to identify this very distant shape as a rear view of a Mistle Thrush. With a bit of imagination the spotting on the throat and the white-edges to the flight feathers can be seen.

High up on one of the street lamps in squirrel alley was this November Moth-type (Epirrita sp.). Only when I looked at the photo did I see the lurking stretch spider Tetragnatha sp.

Priorslee Lake and The Flash

6.0°C > 7.0°C: Clear skies. Light SW wind. Very good visibility.

Sunrise: 07:49 GMT

* = a photo from today.

After all the recent rain, especially yesterday's downpours, both pools are at about the highest level I can recall.

Priorslee Lake: 06:47 – 09:28

(241st visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- When the two adult Mute Swans swam away from the south-west grass only three of the four cygnets went with them. The other cygnet only joined them after about ten minutes.
- Three Pochard were new in. Unusually there were more ducks (two) than drakes (one).
- The Tufted Ducks were continually moving around and hard to census. At least 44: possibly as many as 53 (33 drakes).
- Unusually the Goosander stayed for a protracted period, still present when I departed.
- A Water Rail was heard calling from the north-west reed-area on four separate occasions.
- All the Fieldfare and Redwings were seen early flying over / out of the fields to the East.
- A group of 12 birds flew out of the West end area where the Reed Buntings roost. I am not at all sure what they were. They were Reed Bunting-sized though the flight was more direct than the jerky flight typical of Reed Bunting. They seemed rather too small to be Redwings though with the same rather slender body. I did not hear any calls. Finches?

Birds noted flying over here:
- 2 Canada Geese: outbound together

Also noted:
Nothing else

Not an inspiring sunrise but I will take a dry morning anytime.

A duck Pochard. Even in eclipse (moult) plumage drakes do not show a pale eye-ring.

The rather unusually long-staying brownhead Goosander at the lake. Often this species leaves within minutes of arriving.

An individual Goldfinch from one of several small flocks noted.

Aircraft of the day. This is a Rockwell Commander 114B whose owner lives near Chippenham. Flight trackers do not provide complete detail of the flight but it appears it is en route from Kemble (near Cirencester and also known as Cotswold Airport) to somewhere near York. It returned later in the day. Only about 1500 examples of Commander 112 and 114 models were built in North America between 1972 and 2002 despite its appearance being rather more stylish than the ubiquitous Piper Cherokee and Cessna ranges. This example dates from 1999. The "G-E..." registration hints at a simple one character repaint from its previous ownership in Germany where the "D-E..." range "ist obligatorisch" for all single-engined light aircraft.

Noted later around the Ivy bank:
Among many 100's of flies of various species
- 2 Common Wasp (Paravespula vulgaris)
- *1 Marmalade Hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus)

A Marmalade Hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus) attempting to extract some nectar from what looks rather like an Ivy flower that has seen better days. Despite its delicate appearance, provided the weather is mild and sunny and there are flowers available, then this hoverfly can be seen throughout the year.

Priorslee Lake: 06:59 – 09:33

(240th visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- All the Mute Swans seen flying strongly though only from one end to the other.
- Rather fewer Tufted Ducks: more seen at The Flash later so they have probably moved there.
- Most of the Fieldfare and Redwings were, rather strangely, heading East.

Birds noted flying over here:

- 1 Grey Heron: briefly

Of Note:
Nothing else

A clear start with some scattered high clouds gave an interesting early sky.

The colour developed rather well.

Here is the sun just rising as the cloud becomes dominant.

This is a third winter Yellow-legged Gull. It can be as identified as such by the rather extensive dark along the front of the outer wing and the clean-looking head.

- It is always difficult to keep track of the Great Crested Grebes: I think four this morning.
- A flock of at least 40 Goldfinches were feeding in trees on the island.

Birds noted flying over here:
- 1 Herring Gull
- 1 Jackdaw

Noted on / around the water
- 2 Canada Geese
- 2 Greylag Geese: departed

Noted later:
Around the Ivy bank which was very active after the rain, though mainly with flies:
- Common Wasp (Paravespula vulgaris): only three noted
- Tapered Drone Fly (Eristalis pertinax): just one
- Common Drone Fly (Eristalis tenax): just one
and plenty of unidentified flies.

The four Mute Swan cygnets taking themselves for a fly.

One was much more confident than the others climbing higher and circling behind the island.

Lighting conditions were not good. Here is my best attempt at capturing a drake Goosander.

One of the five Cormorants departing.

Here it goes.

I noted three Grey Herons today. Here is one

Here is the second.

This one was lurking in the trees.

I noted just two hoverflies on the Ivy. This is a male Tapered Drone Fly (Eristalis pertinax).

Most of the insects on the Ivy were flies, many of them what appeared to be a faded greenbottle.

Priorslee Lake and The Flash

4.0°C > 5.0°C: A sliver of early red sky to the East; otherwise increasing low cloud and rain after 09:30. Light ESE breeze increasing moderate. Good visibility.

Sunrise: 07:42 GMT

* = a photo from today.

A quick canter around ahead (just) of the forecast rain in very dull conditions.

Priorslee Lake: 06:54 – 08:59

(238th visit of the year)

Generally a quiet morning, probably weather-related.

Bird notes:
- No sign of yesterday's pair of Eurasian Wigeon. However a duck Common Teal was flushed.
- A smart adult Yellow-legged Gull was one of rather few gulls seen.
- The low count of Jackdaws and Rooks might have been because I arrived slightly too late.
- Three Song Thrushes were singing away for part of the time.

Birds noted flying over here:
- 19 Wood Pigeons
- 2 Black-headed Gulls
- 2 Herring Gulls
- 14 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 4 Cormorants: together
- 11 Jackdaws
- 1 Rook
- 10 Pied Wagtails
- 2 Siskins

Warblers noted:
- 1 Cetti's Warbler: one brief call heard

Birds noted leaving roosts around the lake:
- None: at least three Reed Buntings calling from their roost area but none was seen to leave

Counts from the lake area:
- 2 + 4 (1 brood) Mute Swans
- 5 (3♂) Gadwall
- 8 (5♂) Mallard
- 1 (0♂) Common Teal
- 49 (>19♂) Tufted Duck
- 14 Moorhens
- Coots not counted
- 3 Great Crested Grebes
- 42 Black-headed Gulls only
- 2 Herring Gulls
- 1 Yellow-legged Gull
- 7 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 29 unidentified large gulls: pre-dawn
- 2 Cormorants: arrived separately; one departed

Noted on / around the street lamp poles pre-dawn:
- *1 plumed midge sp.
- *1 stretch spider Tetragnatha sp.
- *1 male Leiobunum rotundum/blackwalli harvestman

Later:
Nothing noted

Not much to show on a morning with very poor light. These all taken with flash on street lamp poles pre-dawn. This is one of the many 'plumed midges'. It is smaller and lacks the banded abdomen of the very common Chironomus plumosus. The other common and easy to identify midge is Microtendipes pedellus but that has pale green on the upper abdomen and pale legs. So this remains unidentified.

The unmistakable shape of a stretch spider Tetragnatha sp.

Male Leiobunum rotundum and L. blackwalli harvestmen can be hard to separate without close views. L. blackwalli has white rings around the eyes which this appears to have. However I think this might be reflection from the camera flash so I am keeping the log as Leiobunum rotundum/blackwalli-type.

The Flash: 09:02 – 09:40

(231st visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- The Goosander totals, at least, are likely to be an under-recording. Birds were moving around rapidly and diving for long periods.

Birds noted flying over here:
- 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull

Noted on / around the water
- 110 Canada Geese: 105 of these arrived in a single group with...
- 1 Greylag Goose and...
- 1 Greylag x Canada Goose
- 2 + 4 (1 brood) Mute Swans
- 52 (35♂) Mallard
- 1 (1♂) all-white duck (Peking(?) Duck)
- 21 (11♂) Tufted Duck
- 16 (3♂) Goosander
- 19 Moorhens
- 28 Coots
- 2 Great Crested Grebes
- 32 Black-headed Gulls
- 3 Cormorants
- 1 Grey Heron

On / around the street lamp poles:
Nothing noted

Later around the Ivy bank:
Nothing noted

A photo I took at The Flash yesterday. The body of this drone fly does look rather tapered though as it seems to have dark front legs it has to be a Common Drone Fly (Eristalis tenax).

Priorslee Lake and The Flash

6.0°C > 9.0°C: Some lingering cloud but mainly clear. Light WSW breeze. Very good visibility.

[Sunrise: 07:41 GMT]

Short visits, still jet-lagged after a USA trip to watch aircraft

Priorslee Lake: 08:25– 09:15

(237th visit of the year)

Viewing only from the dam top area

Bird notes:

- The Mute Swan family went for a fly but did not seem at all confident. One cygnet barely made halfway and the rest struggled inches above the water to the other end. Odd as they all seemed to be flying quite strongly three weeks ago. I hope they are not suffering avian flu.

Birds noted flying over here:

- 7 Lesser Black-backed Gulls

Counts from the lake area:

The Flash: 09:20 – 10:20

(230th visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- At least 15 of the Tufted Duck arrived, presumably flushed from the Balancing Lake.
- One of the regular fishermen reported separate brief visits by both a Great White and a Little Egret in recent days.
- He also noted regular appearance by at least two Kingfishers. I saw one today.

Birds noted flying over here:
- 4 Jackdaws

Noted on / around the water
- 5 Canada Geese

- Red Admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta)
- Common Wasp (Paravespula vulgaris)
- Marmalade Hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus)
- Common Drone Fly (Eristalis tenax)
and plenty of unidentified flies.
