Priorslee Lake and The Flash

9.0°C > 10.0°C: Early low overcast with patchy mostly light rain. Cloud lifted and rain mostly ceased. Then sunny after 09:00 until puffy clouds began to develop. Light / moderate westerly breeze. Very good visibility.

Sunrise: 06:33 BST

* = a species photographed today.

Priorslee Balancing Lake: 05:45 – 09:10

(79th visit of the year)

Two firsts and one probable last for the season:
- *three Common Sandpipers were present throughout. About an average 'first of Spring' date. Species #83
- one House Martin (species #84) was noted among a small number of Sand Martins and a lone Barn Swallow after 08:00
- a party of 19 Redwings flew East at 06:55.

Other bird notes:
- One of the presumed resident pair of Canada Geese seemed to been sitting on eggs for a while.
- A pair of Gadwall reappeared
- A Mistle Thrush was heard singing from the south-east copse.
- Another day when Reed Buntings were seen flying out of the west end roost area: two together today. I would have expected them all to be paired and holding a breeding territory by now.

Birds noted flying over here:
- 3 Canada Geese: a pair outbound; a lone bird flew South
- 4 Greylag Geese: two pairs inbound
- 12 Wood Pigeons
- 2 Collared Doves: singles
- 2 Sparrowhawks: displaying pair

Warblers noted (the number singing in brackets):
- 1 (1) Cetti's Warbler
- 3 (3) Willow Warbler
- 18 (15) Chiffchaffs
- *9 (8) Blackcaps

Hirundines etc., noted: maximum 'instant' count – probably more birds involved:
- 4 Sand Martins
- 1 Barn Swallow
- 1 House Martin

Counts from the lake area:
- 4 Canada Geese: the resident pair chased off another pair that arrived
- 2 + 4 Mute Swans
- 2 (1♂) Gadwall
- 8 (6♂) Mallard: of these 5 (4♂) were on the football field
- 8 Moorhens
- 39 Coots
- 8 Great Crested Grebes
- *3 Common Sandpipers
- 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull: first year, very briefly
- 3 Cormorants: all separate arrivals and departures
- 1 Grey Heron: presumably it was the same that was standing on the football field later

Noted on the street lamp poles pre-dawn:
- *2 male plumed midges (Chironomus plumosus)
- 1 Common Green Lacewing (Chrysoperia carnea)
- *several different species of springtail
- 1 Blunt-tailed Snake Millipede (Cylindroiulus punctatus)
- *1 probable White-lipped Snail (Cepaea hortensis)

In the Priorslee Avenue tunnel pre-dawn:
Nothing of note

Noted later
- *Flowers of Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa)

One of this morning's highlights was the trio of Common Sandpipers. With three present it was difficult to get close to any of them and the light was not good. Here is one.

Whether this is a different individual or not I cannot be sure. A rather pot-bellied species perhaps best identified by the white of the flanks extending up the shoulder.

This one has found some food. When seen 'live' this species constantly bobs its tail.

A clearer view here. Something in the tip of its bill? Mud?

Last shot. The dark bars on the back feathers are only present during the breeding season and wear off later in the year.

A male Blackcap doing its best to hide.

He will be even harder to see once the leaves open on the twigs.

Luckily this one was too busy singing to worry about me.

A male Grey Wagtail on rocks at the dam-face.

Two for the price of one: a male plumed midge (Chironomus plumosus) shares part of the street lamp pole with a species of globular springtail.

I suspect this is a White-lipped Snail (Cepaea hortensis). It was not positioned so I could get a clear shot of the shell to show the number of whorls.

These Wood Anemones (Anemone nemorosa) will look better on a sunny day when they lift their heads up.

The Flash: 09:15 – 10:10

(73rd visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- A Stock Dove was calling from the wooded area along the East side.
- There did seem to be three pairs of Great Crested Grebes. As usual they are hard to keep track of.
- A Great Tit was seen apparently emerging from the hole the Nuthatches were inspecting a few weeks ago.

Birds noted flying over here:
- 1 Jackdaw

Warblers noted (the number singing in brackets):
- *3 (3) Willow Warblers
- 9 (8) Chiffchaffs
- 1 (1) Blackcap

Hirundines etc., noted
None

Noted on / around the water
- 18 Canada Geese
- 9 Greylag Geese
- 2 + 1 Mute Swans: eggs not visible
- 22 (19♂) Mallard
- 1 all-white duck (Peking(?) Duck)
- *19 (13♂) Tufted Duck
- 8 Moorhens
- 26 Coots
- 6 Great Crested Grebes
- 3 Cormorants

Noted on / around the street lamp poles:
- 1 unplumed midge yet again

Of interest noted elsewhere:
- *Swan Mussel (Anodonta cygnea)

It is usual for drake Tufted Ducks to outnumber ducks. 7::2 here. I need to examine the nearest duck more closely if I see her again. She looks very rufous, almost reminiscent of a Ferruginous Duck, scarce in the UK. She isn't: her bill is not black. It is just possible she is a hybrid. I would need a closer view and good photos to check.

A Willow Warbler poses well. Note the pink (orange?) of the bill extends along the length of the lower mandible: only at the base of a Chiffchaff's bill which, in comparison, is slightly narrower.

Not a very pronounced supercilium on this individual.

I suspect this Swan Mussel (Anodonta cygnea) had been caught and then discarded by a fisherman. It was lying at the side of the water.

Priorslee Lake, Woodhouse Lane and The Flash

6.0°C: Another promising start that went rapidly downhill with low overcast and, after 08:30, soaking drizzle for a while. Light north-east breeze. Very good visibility except in drizzle.

Sunrise: 06:43 BST

* = a species photographed today.

Priorslee Balancing Lake: 05:45 – 08:55

(78th visit of the year)

As I was returning from my walk along what remains of Woodhouse Lane (see below) I heard and then saw two Oystercatchers flying West out from the lake area. I do not know whether these had pitched in and been flushed from their usual feeding area on the south-west grass or perhaps just circled and moved on. My 82nd bird species here this year.

Other bird notes:
- The Pheasant was heard calling from the Ricoh copse again.
- One of the presumed resident pair of Canada Geese might well have been sitting on eggs for a while.
- A Mistle Thrush called from the North side copse. I did not see it either in the trees or flying away. They could be breeding in these trees.
- There seems to be five Goldcrest territories this year. I noted only four last year.

Birds noted flying over here:
- 4 Stock Doves: as two pairs
- 22 Wood Pigeons
- 2 Oystercatchers: as highlighted
- 2 Herring Gulls: adults
- 1 Cormorant
- 3 Jackdaws
- 1 Pied Wagtail

Warblers noted (the number singing in brackets):
- 1 (1) Cetti's Warbler
- 1 (1) Willow Warbler
- 15 (15) Chiffchaffs
- 4 (4) Blackcaps

Hirundines etc., noted
None

Counts from the lake area:
- 3 Canada Geese
- 2 + 4 Mute Swans
- 6 (4♂) Mallard
- 1 (1♂) Tufted Duck
- 8 Moorhens
- 39 Coots
- 7 Great Crested Grebes
- 3 Black-headed Gulls: all first years, together briefly
- 2 Cormorants: arrived separately; one departed

Noted on the street lamp poles pre-dawn:
- *1 March Tubic moth (Diurnea fagella)
- 1 Common Flat-body moth (Agonopterix heracliana)
- 1 male plumed midge
- *1 Common Green Lacewing (Chrysoperia carnea)
- several different species of springtail
- *2 White-legged Snake Millipedes (Tachypodoiulus niger)
- 1 species of spider: jumped off!
Frustratingly a larger species of moth was flying around but did not settle.

In the Priorslee Avenue tunnel pre-dawn:
Nothing of note

Noted later
- Flowers of Dog's Mercury (Mercurialis perennis)

"I can see you". A Jay peers at me as I peer at it.

Not a very good photo of a rather brown-looking March Tubic moth (Diurnea fagella). Good-enough to make me realise that I misidentified the moth on the wall of the Priorslee Avenue tunnel as a Brindled Flat-body (Agonopterix arenella) when it should have been a March Tubic.

This male plumed midge is certainly well-plumed on its antennae.

For a change a Common Green Lacewing (Chrysoperia carnea) in its green Summer garb.

One of the two White-legged Snake Millipedes (Tachypodoiulus niger).

Plane of the day: despite the 1000 foot ceiling and drizzle this intrepid pilot was out for a fly. Perhaps he had believed the forecast of wall-to-wall sunshine. This 1960-build Cessna 182C Skylane is owned by Sky Banner Ltd. of Leyland in Lancashire. As the company name implies it is used for banner towing.

(Ed Wilson)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Woodhouse Lane: 08:05 – 08:35

(1st visit of the year)

I steeled myself to visit and see the changes all the continuing house-building had made, running the gauntlet of the alarm system triggered by CCTV as I approached the security fence. The lower part of the lane is much as before: probably quieter as it is no longer a through route. I noted:
- *3 calling Pheasants one of which was seen
- 5 Skylarks, four singing
- *"Pied Wagtails": from photos one of these a male White Wagtail.
- to groups of Linnets comprising at least 15 birds
- *4 Yellowhammers, three males
also noted
- *Flowers of Dog's Mercury (Mercurialis perennis)

It is a bizarre evolutionary path that creates this male Pheasant!

Strutting his stuff!

I could not get close to the pile of compost(?) from the recycling centre at the bottom of Woodhouse Lane and this was the best shot I managed of one of the wagtails. The black breast indicates it is a male with the clear separation of the black chest and black head and nape suggesting a White Wagtail. Other confirmatory features are the grey back on a male; and the clean-looking flanks (always washed grey on a Pied Wagtail).

Another view. My first confirmed record of this (sub)species [authorities differ!] for many years.

An annoying twig in the way of this male Yellowhammer.

A different male flew ahead of me along the hedge. The best I could manage!

A female for comparison. She would show a rusty-looking rump but the wings are covering it.

A unobtrusive flower I had been searching for at the lake without success is Dog's Mercury (Mercurialis perennis). Having found this large clump here I of course managed to find one at the lake!

(Ed Wilson)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Flash: 09:00 – 10:00

(72nd visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- A Jay flew across at the top end.
- One of the Willow Warblers is in the same place as when this species was first noted this year on 24 March. It is some years since this species bred here and for the last few years birds have moved through quickly.

Birds noted flying over here:
None

Warblers noted (the number singing in brackets):
- *4 (4) Willow Warblers
- 10 (10) Chiffchaffs again
- 2 (2) Blackcaps again

Hirundines etc., noted
None

Noted on / around the water
- 22 Canada Geese
- 5 Greylag Geese
- 2 + 1 Mute Swans: eggs not visible
- 18 (16♂) Mallard
- 1 all-white duck (Peking(?) Duck)
- 24 (17♂) Tufted Duck
- 8 Moorhens
- 27 Coots
- 4 Great Crested Grebes
- 3 Cormorants again

Noted on / around the street lamp poles:
- 1 un-plumed midge

Of interest elsewhere:
- *Ground-ivy (Glechoma hederacea) flowers.

Another in my series of photos of Willow Warblers that show none of the identification features!

Only marginally better. Too yellow-toned to be a Chiffchaff.

Perhaps if we ever get some sun...

I think these flowers are Ground-ivy (Glechoma hederacea) but I do not pretend to know much about botany (either).

Priorslee Lake and The Flash

7.0°C > 8.0°C: A promising start with a few breaks in a medium overcast soon deteriorated in to another low overcast morning. Light north-east breeze. Very good visibility.

Sunrise: 06:45 BST

* = a species photographed today.

Priorslee Balancing Lake: 05:40 – 09:05

(77th visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- Two Pheasant were heard calling: one from the Ricoh copse; and one from the remnant wooded area between the academy and the new houses.
- In addition to the presumed resident and potentially breeding pair of Canada Geese another pair and a trio visited briefly before being chased away: as did a pair of Greylag Geese.
- A party of at least 10 Jackdaws flew low South at roost dispersal time – my first such party for some weeks. They were flying behind trees and I was not able to make an accurate count.
- For the first time this year I noted more singing Blackbirds (13) than singing Song Thrushes (10) pre-sunrise.

Birds noted flying over here:
- 8 Canada Geese: pair outbound; three pairs inbound
- 1 (♂?) Tufted Duck
- 7 Wood Pigeons
- 4 Herring Gulls: all adults
- 3 Cormorants: a duo and a single
- >10 Jackdaws: see notes
- 2 Rooks

Warblers noted (the number singing in brackets):
- 1 (1) Cetti's Warbler
- 4 (4) Willow Warblers
- 16 (16) Chiffchaffs
- 5 (5) Blackcaps

Hirundines etc., noted
None

Counts from the lake area:

- 2 Greylag Geese: briefly
- 2 + 4 Mute Swans

- 5 (4♂) Mallard
- 1 (1♂) Tufted Duck: arrived
- 5 Moorhens only
- 42 Coots
- 5 Great Crested Grebes
- 1 Cormorant: arrived
- *1 Grey Heron: departed

Noted on the damp street lamp poles pre-dawn:
- *1 plumed midge likely the very common Chironomus plumosus
- 1 small red-eyed fly sp.
- *2 Common Green Lacewings (Chrysoperia carnea)
- *probably 4 different species of springtail
- *2 White-legged Snake Millipedes (Tachypodoiulus niger)
- *1 Blunt-tailed Snake Millipede (Cylindroiulus punctatus)
- *3 different species of spider

Noted in the Priorslee Avenue tunnel pre-dawn:
- *two species of cranefly
- *several plumed midges

The pair of Gadwall still here. The drake closest to me.

Very strange. This Grey Heron stood its ground (well: hand rail of the Wesley Brook footbridge) and allowed me to take a flash photo of it. As it did not seem to want to go I retreated until it had flown away on its own volition.

A male plumed midge and likely the very common Chironomus plumosus.

A trio of midge-type I found on the wall of the Priorslee Avenue tunnel. The one on the left looks to be another male Chironomus plumosus. I have no idea about the other two.

One of two craneflies, also in the Priorslee Avenue tunnel. Since learning there are more than 100 species in the UK I have stopped trying to identify all but the most well-marked individuals.

One of two Common Green Lacewings (Chrysoperia carnea) still in its brown winter garb.

This looks to be one of the Pogonognathellus longicornis-type springtails.

A trio of springtails of different shaped and sizes. The larger looks to be one of the Dicyrtomina species. The one on the left is the shape of a Pogonognathellus species but much smaller.

One of two White-legged Snake Millipedes (Tachypodoiulus niger) I noted.

My first Blunt-tailed Snake Millipede (Cylindroiulus punctatus) of the year.

One of the three species of spider noted. A male by the look of the 'boxing gloves' (palps).

The Flash: 09:10 – 10:25

(71st visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- *There were two additional first year Mute Swans when I arrived. They were sent on their way by the resident cob and the first year resident. The pen was on the nest throughout.
- More late-date Goosanders with two presumed ducks arriving – I did not see them that well before they moved to the other end.

Birds noted flying over here:
- 1 Jackdaw

Warblers noted (the number singing in brackets):
- *5 (5) Willow Warblers
- 10 (10) Chiffchaffs
- 2 (2) Blackcaps

Hirundines etc., noted
None

Noted on / around the water
- 32 Canada Geese
- 4 Greylag Geese: departed as two pairs
- *2 + 3 Mute Swans: eggs not visible: also see notes
- 22 (18♂) Mallard
- 1 all-white duck (Peking(?) Duck)
- *25 (18♂) Tufted Duck
- 2 (0♂) Goosanders: arrived
- 5 Moorhens
- 24 Coots
- *4 Great Crested Grebes
- 3 Cormorants

Noted on / around the street lamp poles:
- 1 plumed midge

Of interest elsewhere:
- 2 Grey Squirrels

Mute Swans on the warpath. Surprisingly it is last year's remaining cygnet on the left of the picture and the resident cob splashing down on the right.

The youngster leading the charge.

The cob was really angry with...

...these two visiting first year Mute Swans...

...who wisely decided to leave.

A duck Tufted Duck. They always show a vestigial tuft on the nape. This one still has a few white feathers at the base of her bill.

Two of the four Great Crested Grebes I noted. As far as I know the sexes have identical plumage.

I assume these are a pair though I did not see any display

At last. A decent photo of a Willow Warbler.

"Are you pointing that camera at me?"

In this shot the longer and wider supercilium of this species is apparent.

Identification quiz. The white rump is a clue to it being a....

...female Bullfinch munching buds.

With the male in close attendance.
