Priorslee Lake and The Flash

Priorslee Lake:  06:50 – 09:20
The Flash:  09:25 – 10:05

5°C:  Low overcast / mist / light drizzle. Light E wind. Poor visibility

Sunrise: 08:21 GMT

Priorslee Lake:  06:50 – 09:20

(190th visit of the year)

Bird notes
- Mute Swans seem to have gone
- as usual the party of geese – 12 today – flew off before it was light-enough to be 100% certain of the composition: split is based on size as they were silhouetted on the water with calls confirming both Greylag and Canada Geese present
- not clear what the Goosander was doing: coming? going? flying around? Assumed the latter
- a Wood Pigeon was ‘cooing’ pre-dawn: first of the new season?
- c.110 Jackdaws flew out at 07:39 just about visible in the mist. An unseen group was lost in the mist a few minutes later
- two Song Thrushes in full song pre-dawn
- managed to see several Reed Buntings moving to the edge of the reeds before a party of 14 birds flew out. Because of the unusual calls these birds give immediately before they leave I had been minded to wonder whether they could be Yellowhammers as they are in such numbers. Apparently not

Bird totals

Birds noted flying over or flying near the lake
- 1 (?♂) Goosander
- 2 Collared Doves
- >110 Jackdaws
- 1 Rook
- 3 Starlings
- 2 Pied Wagtails
- 1 Siskin

Birds recorded leaving roosts around the lake
- [Magpies not counted]
- 6 Redwings
- 19 Reed Buntings

The counts from the lake area:

Proviso: at no time was it possible to see more than c.75% of the water
- 4 Greylag Geese
- 8 Canada Geese
- 8 (4♂) Gadwall
- 12 (9♂) Mallard
- 2 (1♂) Pochard
- 30 (15♂) Tufted Ducks
- 1 Little Grebe
- 1 Great Crested Grebe
- 1 Water Rail heard
- 9 Moorhens
- [Coots not counted]
- c.55 Black-headed Gulls

My log of other things, on lamp poles
- 2 Winter Moths
- 1 Mottled Umber moth on a different pole to recent sightings

(Ed Wilson)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Flash:  09:25 – 10:05

(149th visit of the year)

Bird notes from here
- the Ring-necked Parakeet calling from the island again
- Song Thrush singing here as well as at the lake
and
- 1 harvestman (probably Paroligolophus agrestis) on a lamp pole in squirrel alley

Birds noted flying over / near The Flash
None

The counts from the water
- 2 + 1 Mute Swans again
- 2 Canada Geese: the usual?
- 38 (22♂) Mallard
- 26 (12♂) Tufted Ducks
- 52 (14♂) Goosanders
- 2 Cormorants
- 1 Grey Heron
- 1 Great Crested Grebe
- 2 Moorhens
- 18 Coots again
- 23 Black-headed Gulls

Pedalling away at speed and creating a bow-wave is this drake Goosander. A pink flush starting on its belly.

Checking behind for the cause of its rapid departure from its favourite feeding location.

This struck me as something different. As far as I can recall all the Blackbirds I have seen with white-patches in their plumage have been males. This is a female showing white in a number of places.
A long way up a lamp post in the misty gloom of squirrel alley does not make for a great photo of this harvestman, probably Paroligolophus agrestis.

24 Dec 18

Priorslee Lake, The Flash, Trench Lock Pool and Trench Middle Pool

But not necessarily in that order

Priorslee Lake:  12:30 – 12:50
The Flash:  10:10 – 11:00
Trench Lock Pool:  11:10 – 11:25 // 12:00 – 12:20
Trench Middle Pool:  11:30 – 11:55

3°C > 6°C:  Mainly sunny after earlier mist / fog. Almost calm. Moderate / good visibility

Sunrise: 08:21 GMT

Firstly can I wish Season’s Greetings to both my readers

Highlight today was my first-ever Little Egret at Priorslee Flash

Unusual records today were
- no gulls on Trench Lock either before or after I walked to Middle Pool and back. This despite birds obviously arriving at and leaving from Middle Pool from somewhere local
- no Swans at Priorslee Lake

Priorslee Lake:  12:30 – 12:50

(189th visit of the year)

Bird notes from here
- a fifth pair of Gadwall today
- 2 pairs of Goosanders fishing at different ends of the water
- low Moorhen count due to dogs in SW area – Moorhens always hide; Coots just go on the water

The counts from the lake area only:
- 10 (5♂) Gadwall
- 7 (5♂) Mallard
- 1 (1♂) Pochard
- 35 (18♂) Tufted Ducks
- 4 (2♂) Goosander
- 1 Cormorant
- 2 Little Grebes again
- 2 Great Crested Grebes
- 3 Moorhens
- 72 Coots
- 112 Black-headed Gulls
- 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull

(Ed Wilson)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Flash:  10:10 – 11:00

(148th visit of the year)

Bird notes from here
- Tufted Ducks were scattered all around and amongst the Goosanders: hard to find
- lots of chasing and fighting amongst, mainly the brownhead, Goosanders
- the Little Egret as highlighted. Species #75 here this year
- presumably the same Ring-necked Parakeet heard from the E side wooded area

Birds noted flying over / near The Flash
- 10 Starlings

The counts from the water
- 2 + 1 Mute Swans
- 2 Canada Geese
- 29 (19♂) Mallard
- 14 (6♂) Tufted Ducks
- 76 (19♂) Goosanders
- 1 Little Egret
- 1 Grey Heron
- 1 Great Crested Grebe
- 1 Moorhen
- 18 Coots
- 36 Black-headed Gulls

Nothing special, just a fine drake Mallard with tail spread and showing the blue speculum (green in some lights). Note the curly ‘tail’.

And Mrs. Mallard asleep also with tail spread and blue speculum showing.

A brownhead Goosander taking a shower.

And then getting rid of the excess water.

Not sure what these Goosanders were doing, swimming fast alongside each other and making waves. None of them shows any white above the bill so it seems they are all adult ducks.

Some way away from me as it landed on the island. The yellow feet mean it is a Little Egret. The remote possibility of a New World Snow Egret cane be discounted as on that species the yellow goes all the way up the back of the ‘leg’ (tarsus) to the ‘knee’ (ankle).

Here it is settled, yellow toes spread.

(Ed Wilson)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trench Lock Pool:  11:10 – 11:25 // 12:00 – 12:20

(31st visit of the year)

Bird notes from here
- 4 Mute Swans when I arrived: 2 flew in. A pair seem to be trying to chase all the others away – whether this is a new pair or the resident cob has found a new partner is unclear. At least 5 of the 6 swans appeared to have no rings to help ID
- Shoveler back again
- now a duck Pochard as well as the drake
- Great Spotted Woodpecker heard

Birds noted flying over / near here (other than local Wood Pigeons and Jackdaws)
- 1 Collared Dove

The counts from the water
- 6 Mute Swans
- 36 Canada Geese
- 13 (8♂) Mallard
- 1 (1♂) ‘feral’ Mallard as usual
- 3 (1♂) Shoveler
- 2 (1♂) Pochard
- 33 (15♂)Tufted Ducks
- 15 (8♂) Goosanders
- 1 Grey Heron
- 3 Little Grebes
- 1 Great Crested Grebe again
- 4 Moorhens
- 108 Coots
- [no gulls]

Closing on from right and left: the two Mute Swans attempting to take control of the water here attempt to persuade one of the others to leave.

(Ed Wilson)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trench Middle Pool:  11:30 – 11:55

(30th visit of the year)

Notes from here
- Great Crested Grebe now back again
- only 44 Black-headed Gulls until some food arrived ....
- amazingly my first Chaffinch of the year here! (species #47)
and
- several Muscid flies found sunning on a lamp posts despite only 5°C air temperature

Birds noted flying over / near here
- 1 Common Buzzard

The counts from the water
- 2 Greylag Geese still
- 32 Canada Geese
- 23 (15♂) Mallard again
- 1 (1♂) Pochard still
- 8 (4♂) Tufted Ducks
- 3 (0♂) Goosanders: 2 of these flew in
- 1 Cormorant again
- 1 Great Crested Grebe
- 10 Moorhens
- 33 Coots
- 85 Black-headed Gulls
- 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls

Priorslee Lake and The Flash

Priorslee Lake:  09:00 – 09:35
The Flash:  09:40 – 10:20

6°C:  Low overcast / mist / light drizzle. Almost calm. Moderate/ poor visibility

Sunrise: 08:20 GMT

Priorslee Lake:  09:00 – 09:35

(188th visit of the year)

Just a quick look from both end to check birds on the water

The recent heavy rain has washed mud across almost the whole lake. Only the NE area, at the moment, is still relatively clean water. The Wesley Brook is flowing clear where it mixes with drains under the academy near the Teece Drive gate. It is these drains that are running brown. The soiling perhaps explains why many of the Tufted Duck have departed. What the medium-term effect will be from silting up the lake bottom is hard to predict. The Wesley Brook outflow from the sluice is also very muddy

Another possible explanation for the reduced duck numbers is the installation of automatic bird-scarers in the fields to the east. The gunfire noises were making the Coots feeding on the SW grass rather jumpy. The gunfire seemed particularly noisy today and could be clearly heard at The Flash as well. Whether this was atmospherics and / or lack of road noise; or whether the scarers have been moved closer to the lake is hard to say. I heard and saw no scarers in the Woodhouse Lane area on the 17th December

The arriving Cormorant was not interested in fishing – it went straight on to one of the boat launching platforms and hung its wings out

Bird totals

The counts from the lake area:
- 2 Mute Swans as usual
- 2 Canada Geese (arrived)
- 8 (4♂) Gadwall again
- 4 (1♂) Mallard
- 26 (18♂) Tufted Ducks
- 1 Cormorant (arrived)
- 2 Little Grebes
- 1 Great Crested Grebe
- 8 Moorhens
- 75 Coots
- 65 Black-headed Gulls

My log of other things, on lamp poles
- 1 Mottled Umber moth – a rather soggy specimen in a different place to yesterday

(Ed Wilson)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Flash:  09:40 – 10:20

(147th visit of the year)

Bird notes from here
- yet another good count of Goosanders. Even harder than usual to make the count as there was almost no-one else about to move the birds away from their preferred feeding areas and therefore more in to the open
and
- 1 Grey Squirrel

Birds noted flying over / near The Flash

The counts from the water
- 2 + 1 Mute Swans as usual
- 2 Canada Geese
- 32 (20♂) Mallard
- 21 (8♂) Tufted Ducks
- 98 (27♂) Goosanders
- 2 Cormorants
- 1 Great Crested Grebe

8°C:  Scattered clouds. Moderate WSW wind. Very good visibility

Sunrise: 08:20 GMT

Priorslee Lake:  06:25 – 09:45

(187th visit of the year)

Bliss: work on the new housing estate is suspended for Christmas. Can hear again

Bird notes:
- Mute Swans again went for a fly-around, this morning inspecting the progress on the new houses before returning
- confirmed just 4 pairs of Gadwall at the moment – as yesterday
- 2 Goosanders seen with Tufted Duck sleeping in the middle of the lake: they left at 07:45 before it was light-enough to sex them. Single brownheads flew W at 08:05 and 08:30
- 4 Little Grebes: singles in different locations
- I assume most of the Jackdaws flew below my line of sight to the E
- amazing total of Reed Buntings seen flying out of the W end roost – groups of 5, 8, 10 and 11. At least two more birds still calling in the area. Probably one of these seen feeding on the W-end footpath much later. My highest-ever count

Bird totals

Birds noted flying over or flying near the lake
- 2 (0♂) Goosanders
- 1 Cormorant
- 3 Wood Pigeons only
- 31 Jackdaws
- 2 Goldfinches
- 1 Lesser Redpoll

Birds recorded leaving roosts around the lake
- 57 Magpies
- 1 Starling
- 1 Redwing only [main roost area not visited]
- 34 Reed Buntings (gulp)

The counts from the lake area:
- 2 Mute Swans
- 8 (4♂) Gadwall
- 4 (2♂) Mallard
- 56 (23♂) Tufted Ducks
- 2 (?♂) Goosanders
- 1 Grey Heron
- 4 Little Grebes
- 2 Great Crested Grebes
- 11 Moorhens
- 84 Coots
- c.175 Black-headed Gulls

My log of other things, on lamp poles
- 1 Mottled Umber moth – another new fresh specimen
- 1 stretch spider, Tetragnatha sp
- 1 orb-web spider, perhaps Zygiella sp.
- a few ‘winter midges’ in flight only

Just about 5 hours away from the full moon. This taken at 06:38 and full moon at 11:49.

Can it really be Spring? Looks that way here. Along the N side.

Well how many things are there here? In the 8 o’clock position is a spider, I think probably Zygiella x-notata or Z. atrica. Up at 12 / 1 o’clock seems to be legs of, I’m guessing, a spider clutching a dead moth, though I can’t suggest what species. Then at 4 o’clock something banded and with long-legs. Lots of remnant webs and debris as well. If the lamp posts were shorter I’d take a brush and clean the rubbish off them.

(Ed Wilson)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Flash:  09:50 – 10:40

(146th visit of the year)

Bird notes from here
- another good count of Goosanders with a higher than usual number of drakes
- a Ring-necked Parakeet calling from the island again – it flew off yesterday so is perhaps roosting here
and
- I scoured the Ivy by Priorslee Academy: only Muscid flies seen and then only when the sun was out

Birds noted flying over / near The Flash
- 1 Siskin again

The counts from the water
- 2 + 1 Mute Swans
- 4 Canada Geese: 2 of these arrived
- 34 (21♂) Mallard
- 21 (7♂) Tufted Ducks
- 93 (23♂) Goosanders
- 1 Cormorant
- 2 Grey Herons
- 1 Great Crested Grebe still
- 1 Moorhen
- 15 Coots
- 46 Black-headed Gulls

A pair of Goosanders. To me the drake has a lascivious look about him, but perhaps that says more about me than him.
A couple of Muscid flies getting whatever nectar is left in the Ivy flowers. Was unable to find anything more interesting nectaring here.

Priorslee Lake and The Flash

Priorslee Lake:  10:50 – 11:35
The Flash:  09:45 – 10:40

9°C:  Broken cloud with mainly light showers. Fresh W wind. Very good visibility

Sunrise: not relevant

Early rain kept me away until later. The Flash at normal time. The lake later and only birds on the water logged

Priorslee Lake:  10:50 – 11:35

(186th visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- better attempt at counting the Gadwall today, though one of the usual pairs not located
- the Yellow-legged Gull was a 1st winter bird and only ID-ed from photos

Bird totals

The counts from the lake area:
- 2 Mute Swans
- 8 (4♂) Gadwall
- 8 (6♂) Mallard
- 2 (1♂) Pochard
- 68 (32♂) Tufted Ducks
- 4 Cormorants
- 1 Grey Heron
- 1 Little Grebe
- 2 Great Crested Grebes again
- 5 Moorhens
- 87 Coots
- 71 Black-headed Gulls
- 6 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 1 Yellow-legged Gull

This gull gave, and gives, me some confusion. When I saw it on the water I thought the mantle colour indicated it was a 1st winter Herring Gull. However in flight the upper-wing pattern did not look right. It was hard to see as the strong wind was blowing both me and the gull around. The best shots I could manage in those conditions helped. Here we can see that the inner primaries are not pale as they would be on a Herring Gull, only pale-edged. It also seems that while the primary and outer secondary coverts are dark the inner secondary coverts are not. It may be ‘blown out’ but there seems to be no spotting on the tail above the neat white-tipped black tail-band.

On this view the underside looks rather streaked and we get confirmation that the inner secondary coverts are indeed pale.

Confirmed here. My vote is for Yellow-legged Gull. The only other Herring Gull-like gulls reported in the area recently are Caspian Gulls and these show rather white / pale heads – the previous shot.

(Ed Wilson)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Flash:  09:45 – 10:40

(145th visit of the year)

Refurbishment of one of the footbridges has been completed and the path is again open all around the water. It will be closed again from 05 January for 3 weeks for the other footbridge to be done

The wooden steps behind The Priorslee (pub) have been recovered. Most of them now have close wire-mesh as an anti-slip measure. The large-gauge wide mesh installed a few weeks ago seemed likely to do more harm than good

Highlight was finally tracking down the strange loud calls I heard yesterday. I should have been able to recognise the calls as I was bemused by the same species at the lake only 6 weeks ago. A Ring-necked Parakeet. Managed some photos of it today. Became my 73rd species at / from The Flash in 2018, back-dated to yesterday

Other bird notes from here
- the usual 2 Canada Geese were joined by 46 more that flew in with 2 Greylag Geese
- the Lesser Redpoll fly-over was new for me here this year: my 74th species at / from The Flash in 2018

Birds noted flying over / near The Flash
- 1 Common Buzzard
- 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull
- 7 Jackdaws
- 2 Starlings
- 1 Lesser Redpoll

The counts from the water
- 2 + 1 Mute Swans: as usual
- 2 Greylag Geese
- 48 Canada Geese
- 35 (20♂) Mallard
- 20 (7♂) Tufted Ducks
- 70 (14♂) Goosanders
- 1 Grey Heron again
- 1 Great Crested Grebe again
- 3 Moorhens again
- 14 Coots
- 35 Black-headed Gulls

Part of the Goosander flock today: 11 of the 14 drakes present are in this group: only 9 of the 56 brownheads.

Here is the Ring-necked Parakeet.. Only males have a dark collar – there is a hint of one here at the side of the neck. Another name for this species is Rose-ringed Parakeet: not a particularly good name though on birds with the dark collar there is a red-edging.

Here it is doing what all parrots enjoy doing – chewing sticks.

Priorslee Lake and The Flash: then Trench Lock Pool and Trench Middle Pool

Priorslee Lake:  06:30 – 09:40
The Flash:  09:45 – 10:30
Trench Lock Pool:  10:45 – 10:55 // 11:30 – 11:45
Trench Middle Pool:  11:00 – 11:25

5°C > 10°C:  Broken cloud with mainly light showers. Clearer for a while. Light / moderate SW wind. Very good visibility

Sunrise: 08:19 GMT

Priorslee Lake:  06:30 – 09:40

(185th visit of the year)

Other bird notes:
- Mute Swans went for several flights around their estate: never looked like leaving
- all geese today certainly Greylag Geese both on call and visually – but not the ‘group of 10’
- only one pair of Gadwall noted: perhaps I was not diligent-enough in their revised W-end feeding area?
- drake Pochard new in
- significant reduction in Tufted Duck numbers
- 3 Goosanders dropped in: a brownhead quickly left: the pair remaining stayed mostly together for well over an hour with some strange ‘lying flat on the water’ behaviour from the duck
- slight increase in Coot numbers likely due to brighter viewing conditions
- first Black-headed Gulls not until 07:35: many fewer at any one time though usual confusion of later arrivals and / or returnees
- 2 Redwings seen feeding on ground along S side: unusual

Bird totals

Birds noted flying over or flying near the lake
- 4 Greylag Geese? [1 outbound; 3 inbound]
- 3 small ducks sp. – Teal or Tufted Duck?
- 16 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 2 Stock Doves
- 26 Wood Pigeons
- 124 Jackdaws
- 1 Rook again
- 1 Raven
- 2 Starlings

Birds recorded leaving roosts around the lake
- 64 Magpies
- 3 Redwings only

The counts from the lake area:
- 2 Mute Swans
- 2 (1♂) Gadwall
- 9 (7♂) Mallard
- 1 (1♂) Pochard
- 65 (34♂) Tufted Ducks
- 3 (1♂) Goosander
- 1 Little Grebe still
- 2 Great Crested Grebes
- 11 Moorhens
- 84 Coots
- >250 Black-headed Gulls
- 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull

My log of other things, on lamp poles
- 1 Mottled Umber moth – very fresh specimen
- 1 Nursery Web Spider
- >10 ‘winter midges’ [Trichocera relegationis?]
- small fly sp. later (?Black Legionnaire type?)

I was at the wrong end when the cloud cleared and some colour appeared in the sky. Looking west.

The actual sunrise was behind trees.

Behaviour I have not seen before from Goosanders. The pair on the lake mostly stayed together. The duck (brownhead) spent long periods apparently ‘drowning’ – in binoculars I could not see that her bill was just above water. His ‘sky-pointing’ is presumably a display to her.

Whatever she is doing seems to ‘get his tail up’!

I managed to catch this Jay on the ground. He was throwing leaves around just like the Blackbird that is hopping away on the left. No doubt looking for food underneath those leaves. Note the Blackbird has a few white feathers around the eye.

Something has caught the Jay’s beady eye.

This wary bird flew to a different area when I attempted to get any closer.

And here, at extreme range, is an even more wary Redwing hunting in the grass. We cannot see the ‘red wing’ but the face pattern is diagnostic.

A Song Thrush also in the grass. He was wary but less so.

And this Song Thrush was not worried about me – much.

A ‘new’ Mottled Umber moth this morning.

“Come in number 7”. We can see comparing the size of the fly with one of the numbers of the lamp just how small it was. There are not too many fly species active at this time of year. This is unusual in having wings much longer than its body. I suspect it might be one of the Black Legionnaire (Beris sp.) flies. But then again ....

The Flash:  09:45 – 10:30

(144th visit of the year)

Bird notes from here
- yesterday’s increased number of Mallard maintained: were not the birds missing from the lake yesterday as those had returned today
- drake Pochard new in
- first Kingfisher for a while: still no sightings at the lake though

Birds noted flying over / near The Flash
- 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 2 Jackdaws
- 1 Siskin

The counts from the water
- 2 + 1 Mute Swans: as usual
- 2 Canada Geese: as usual?
- 48 (29♂) Mallard
- 1 (1♂) Pochard
- 23 (7♂) Tufted Ducks
- 46 (7♂) Goosanders
- 1 Cormorant
- 1 Grey Heron
- 1 Great Crested Grebe
- 3 Moorhens
- 15 Coots
- 42 Black-headed Gulls
- 1 Kingfisher

With a lot of white around the base of the bill is this a duck Scaup? No! We can see a vestigial ‘tuft’ indicating this is just a duck Tufted Duck.

And when she turns sideways the tuft does not look ‘vestigial' at all.

Another duck with somewhat less white at the base of the bill. Not really asleep.

A drake Tufted Duck from an unusual angle – see just how wide the bill is. Tufted Ducks are vegetarians, plucking underwater plants. Hence the bill shape to squeeze out the water.

Clap hands: it’s nearly Christmas. A duck Goosander celebrates.

This adult winter Lesser Black-backed Gull ticks all the species ID boxes. Note the fine streaking on the head; the red spot on the lower mandible; the dark trailing edge along the whole underwing with only the tips of the inner primaries slightly paler; the dark upperwing noticeably paler than the black of the wing tips; a wide-ish white trailing edge on the upper secondaries; white ‘mirrors’ in the three outer primaries only with white tips on all the upper primaries.

It cannot be Christmas without a Robin. A ‘climate change Robin’ – no snow!

Trench Lock Pool:  10:45 – 10:55 // 11:30 – 11:45

(30th visit of the year)

Bird notes from here
- Shoveler gone again
- drake Pochard new in [bird at Middle Pool still present]
- further small decline in Coot numbers

Birds noted flying over / near here
None

The counts from the water
- 1 Mute Swan again
- 21 Canada Geese
- 3 (2♂) Mallard
- 1 (1♂) ‘feral’ Mallard again
- 1 (1♂) Pochard
- 22 (8♂)Tufted Ducks
- 24 (6♂) Goosanders
- 2 Little Grebes again
- 1 Great Crested Grebe still
- 3 Moorhens
- 108 Coots
- 12 Black-headed Gulls
- 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls again

A quintuple of drake Goosanders [I think quintuplet would mean they were siblings?]. Strange how often these will stick together and ignore the plethora of ducks dancing around their handbags.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trench Middle Pool:  11:00 – 11:25

(29th visit of the year)

Notes from here
- a duck ‘feral-type Mallard’ back after some weeks. I have not seen it elsewhere
- the over-flying Goosanders did not seem to have gone to Trench Lock when I returned there
- Great Crested Grebe gone again
- most of the gulls left after a car backfired
and
- red-eyed Muscid fly found sunning on a lamp post (Phaonia subventa)

Birds noted flying over / near here
- 8 (2♂) Goosanders

The counts from the water
- 2 Greylag Geese remain
- 30 Canada Geese
- 31 (23♂) Mallard again
- 1 (0♂) ‘feral-type Mallard
- 1 (1♂) Pochard yet again
- 6 (4♂) Tufted Ducks
- 2 (0♂) Goosanders again
- 1 Cormorant
- 9 Moorhens
- 29 Coots
- 41 Black-headed Gulls

I think this is the Muscid fly Phaonia subventa – no vernacular name. Noted as active though November it is likely that after the mild Autumn its flight season has been extended.
