Priorslee Balancing Lake and The Flash

2.0°C > 4.0°C: Mostly clear skies; a few clouds to the East. Just frosted as the wind dropped away. Light south-westerly wind. Very good visibility.

Sunrise: 08:03 GMT

Priorslee Balancing Lake: 06:30 – 09:15

(21st visit of the year)

There were many small and medium-sized twigs brought down by Storm Éowyn. I did not notice any larger branches or trees that had succumbed.

Bird notes:
- as I was leaving and walking back up Teece Drive two Mute Swans flew West and were likely the birds I saw at The Flash a few minutes later. I had not been in a position to see the water here for at least 10 minutes so I am unsure whether they had visited and been chased away or were merely flying over.
- there were very few Black-headed Gulls today. The first 10 flew directly over after 07:45 and I counted no more than 31 on the water.
- the first large gull arrived at 07:10 and immediately departed. The main arrival started c.07:20 with eventually at least 300 Lesser Black-backs present. Very few – I counted only 12 – Herring Gulls among them.
- there were Feral Pigeons flying around the new houses to the East of Castle Farm Way – it didn't take them long to find a new place to forage. I do not normally record this species when seen around the houses.
- a Kestrel was hovering over the fields to the East at c.08:00.

Bird(s) noted flying over here:
- 19 Canada Geese: outbound in two groups
- 2 Mute Swans: see notes
- 21 Wood Pigeon
- 13 Black-headed Gulls
- 5 Herring Gulls
- 21 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- *4 Cormorants: together
- 1 Kestrel
- 36 Jackdaws
- 74 Rooks

Counts from the lake area:
- 34 Canada Geese: of these 11 arrived in three groups
- 2 Mute Swans: see notes
- *6 (3♂) Gadwall
- 7 (6♂) Mallard
- 4 (2♂) Pochard
- 20 (11♂) Tufted Duck
- 5 Moorhens
- 216 Coots
- 1 Great Crested Grebe
- 31 Black-headed Gulls
- 12 Herring Gulls
- c.300 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 5 Cormorants: arrived and departed together: one adult
- 1 Grey Heron
- 1 Great (White) Egret: arrived
- 2 Kingfishers

Noted on the street lamp poles pre dawn.

Moths:
- *1 Early Moth Theria primaria

Spiders, harvestmen etc.:
- *1 Furrow Orbweaver Larinioides cornutus

The Orange Ladybird Halyzia sedecimguttata seems to have gone from its over-wintering site.

Telford Sailing Club
Noted around Telford Sailing Club HQ pre dawn.

Spiders, harvestmen etc.:
- 2 spiders, not specifically identified

Noted later:

Spiders, harvestmen etc.:
- *1 harvestman Paroligolophus agrestis on the Teece Drive fence.

New Bird Species
One addition to the bird species on my site for here in 2025:
61 Kestrel

A splendid drake Gadwall...

...and his beau.

The groups of four Cormorants that over-flew. The front bird shows the white thigh-patch of a breeding condition bird. The third shows a pale belly of an immature (less than four years old?) bird.

From this angle the red bare skin above the eye makes it look as if it has had a hard night on the tiles.

That's better.

"Was it something I said?"

Lurking in the Wesley Brook just upstream from the bridge was a Grey Wagtail. Reminder: wagtails get their name from the colour of the back so this not a Yellow Wagtail as one might presume.

Two views of this morning's Early Moth Theria primaria. Here showing the underwing markings and the spurs on the middle pair of legs.

Here from above with the antennae well shown against the street lamp pole. With feathered antennae this is male – in most species of moths the females have simple antennae: those of males are well-developed to detect female pheromones.

This spider is, I believe, a Furrow Orbweaver Larinioides cornutus. It is smaller than most I see – the white band across the bottom is a plastic tie. What is that tiny, tiny creature between the front legs of the spider?

The Flash: 09:20 – 10:25

(19th visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- two additional adult Mute Swans were present and being successfully chased away. I assume the two seen over(?) the Balancing Lake earlier.
- Jays are not infrequently seen or heard at the top end. One was heard today and was surprisingly my first of the year.

Bird(s) noted flying over here:
- 1 Herring Gull
- 6 Lesser Black-backed Gulls

Noted on / around the water:
- 17 Canada Geese
- *6 > 4 Mute Swans
- 41 (26♂) Mallard
- 1 (0♂) Pochard
- *55 (32♂) Tufted Duck
- *20 Moorhens
- 47 Coots
- 45 Black-headed Gulls
- *2 Herring Gulls: one adult: one first winter both briefly

Noted elsewhere:

Fungus:
- *King Alfred's Cakes Daldinia concentrica also known as cramp balls, and coal fungus.

New Bird Species
Two additions to the bird species on my site for here in 2025:
45 Jay
46 *Goldcrest

The resident cob Mute Swan chasing one of the visitors.

He means business!

Last year's immatures offer some support by raising their wings.

Off go the interlopers.

Angry Mrs. Tufted Duck. Still some white at the base of the bill so she may be a Miss (first winter).

A close-up show the "tuft", always present but short on the duck.

"Don't jump!" A Moorhen contemplates the water.

Amazing texture in the plumage.

In spite of some puzzling features I cannot suggest that this is anything other than a first winter Herring Gull. The back looks well-advanced in to second year plumage yet the wings, especially the secondary-coverts, look darker than they should. Also the very contrasting bill was sufficiently unusual for Obsidentify to suggest Glaucous Gull where the first winter bird's bill does look like this. The dusky head seems to rule out Yellow-legged or Caspian Gull.

From underneath.

They are hard to photograph! My first Goldcrest of the year here peeks out and...

...is gone!

King Alfred's Cakes Daldinia concentrica also known as cramp balls, and coal fungus.

Plane of the day. This is a Best Off Sky Ranger 912, an Indian design for amateur-build and popular in the UK. The two registered owners live in St. Georges and Gnosall and keep this aircraft at Welshpool / Mid-Wales Airport. It was flying to the airstrip at Otherton, near Penkridge.

Priorslee Balancing Lake and The Flash

1.0°C > 3.0°C: Yet another win for the Telford microclimate. Stars and the moon when I left Newport. Broken medium cloud when I arrived at the lake, this filling and lowering to cover the tops of the trees in mist and murk. Some light rain. Light / moderate south-easterly wind. Moderate visibility becoming poor.

Sunrise: 08:05 GMT

* = a species photographed today

Priorslee Balancing Lake: 06:30 – 09:25

(20th visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- unusual to see more duck Pochard (three) than drakes (one). Almost always drakes significantly outnumber the ducks.
- there were no gulls roosting here. The first c.50 of eventually >450 Lesser Black-backed Gulls started arriving at 07:22. About 30 Herring Gulls were noted with them.
- the first c.50 Black-headed Gulls arrived after 07:30. I paid them little attention, assuming many more would follow. In practice very few did!
- as usual almost all the gulls had gone by 08:30. Thereafter new(?) birds arrived from the North: I counted 11 Herring Gulls and 55 Lesser Black-backed Gulls.
- *an egret flew over eastbound at c.08:00. In the gloom it was hard to say whether it was a Little or Great (White) Egret against the leaden sky. A series of very poor photos suggests it was most likely another Great (White). 'Ours' had arrived at 07:45 and was still present until 08:30 at least.
- I suspect a Kingfisher is roosting along the North side. I hear calls well before dawn and also well before I see and hear it in flight. In South America many bird species have what is know as a "dawn song" that they only give as they wake and before they set off on the day's activities.
- with slightly milder conditions there were four Song Thrushes singing [there was a Blackbird singing in my garden at 06:15].

Bird(s) noted flying over here:
- 13 Wood Pigeon
- 1 Herring Gull
- 4 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- *1 Great (White) Egret
- 34 Jackdaws
- 39 Rooks

Counts from the lake area:
- 37 Canada Geese: none of these departed
- 2 Mute Swans
- 5 (2♂) Gadwall
- 15 (10♂) Mallard

- >450 // 55 Lesser Black-backed Gulls

Telford Sailing Club
Noted around Telford Sailing Club HQ pre dawn.

Flies:
- *1 winter cranefly, likely Trichocera annulata

Barkflies:
- 2 barkfly Valenzuela flavidus-type: the exact same place as on Tuesday – I suspect they are dead

Noted later:

Spiders, harvestmen etc.:
- *1 harvestman Paroligolophus agrestis on the Teece Drive fence.

New Bird Species
No additions to the bird species on my site for here in 2025:

Not very helpful in trying to identify the over-flying egret. Taken in light rain and very overcast conditions at 08:00. From the broad outer wing I have concluded it is most likely a Great (White) Egret. 'Our' bird was present before and after so this was a different individual.

The only insect I could find on the street lamp poles and on the walls of the Telford Sailing Club HQ was this winter cranefly, likely Trichocera annulata.

My best photo of the day. It is a harvestman Paroligolophus agrestis. The pale line down the abdomen and the thicker inner part of the (only seven!) legs clinch the ID. It is not often that I find a harvestman still about after the turn of the year.

The Flash: 09:30 – 10:30

(18th visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- just one Little Grebe noted: the individual previously noted as coming in to breeding plumage.
- a Stock Dove was heard calling from trees at the bottom of squirrel alley.
- a flock of c.50 finches were flying around the island. Both Siskins and Goldfinches heard. The visibility was too poor for any visual identification.

Priorslee Balancing Lake and The Flash

3.0°C > 4.0°C: The Telford microclimate strikes again. Low overcast, mist and murk. Light southerly wind. Poor or very poor visibility.

Sunrise: 08:08 GMT

* = a species photographed today

Priorslee Balancing Lake: 06:30 – 09:30

(19th visit of the year)

The low cloud and poor visibility made for a 'thin' log.

Bird notes:
- probably the same extra adult Mute Swan as yesterday was already being put to flight by 07:15. It finally departed c.08:00.
- at least 20 Herring Gulls and 230 Lesser Black-backed Gulls were on the water at 07:25. They seemed settled were almost silent at this time and I suspect these had been roosting. More arrived with Black-headed Gulls joining them after 07:40. 15 of the Black-headed Gulls flew straight over.

Bird(s) noted flying over here:
- 13 Canada Geese: 11 outbound together; pair South
- 2 Greylag Geese: single outbound and perhaps the same inbound a few minutes later
- 3 Wood Pigeon
- 15 Black-headed Gulls
- 3 Jackdaws
- 13 Rooks
- 1 Redwing at least heard overhead

Counts from the lake area:
- 51 Canada Geese: many of these departed
- 3 Mute Swans: the extra bird eventually departed
- 5 (2♂) Gadwall
- 7 (5♂) Mallard
- 1 (0♂) Pochard
- 19 (12♂) Tufted Duck
- 2 Moorhens

- 1 Great Crested Grebe
- >150 Black-headed Gulls
- >25 Herring Gulls
- >400 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- no Grey Heron or Great (White) Egret again

At many places they are planting reeds as a way of helping to reduce pollution. The Severn Trent approach seems to be to cut the reeds and leave the litter to pollute the water. Pah!

When I first noted the Little Grebe it set off at speed for cover.

I waited around and it emerged – of course there is a twig in the way!

Eventually it came out in the open.

And dealt with a nasty itch.

A persistent itch before

..setting off back to cover. This bird is I suspect a first winter bird.

Well-pleased with the results I was most unprepared for this: another Little Grebe, this more distant individual coming in to breeding plumage with the rufous neck and yellow spot at the base of the bill. Also with darker flanks the tail looks more typically powder puff-like (does anyone know what a powder puff is these days? Not that I ever used one you understand!)

A smart-looking Collared Dove.

The Flash and Priorslee Balancing Lake

2.0°C > 4.0°C: Mostly a medium overcast. A few breaks at The Flash. Some light showery rain later. Light southerly wind. Moderate visibility and murky at the lake.

[Sunrise: 08:09 GMT]

I again decided not to peer in to the early gloom and performed my usual routes later than usual starting at The Flash.

Priorslee Balancing Lake: 09:25 – 10:20

(18th visit of the year)

They do say that the third Monday in January is the most depressing day of the year. That was certainly true here with contractors from Severn Trent were strimming all remaining vegetation from along and in front of the dam. This is not my understanding of the plan when I discussed ST's plan with their ecologists last October. Whether there had been a change of plan; whether I had been misled; or whether it was a case of "boys with toys" wielding the equipment I have no idea. I am depressed.

Bird notes:
- what was likely the same two adult Mute Swans that had been chased off at The Flash some 20 minutes earlier were just leaving here. The was another adult that was being chased throughout.

And they were not finished with the removal of all the vegetation on and around the dam. Sure: it will grow back, if allowed to. Bit by bit the natural world is disappearing.

These two visiting adult Mute Swans were about to leave.

This was the third visiting swan. It was still being chased around a trying too find a quiet spot where it could not be seen.

At the back a duck Pochard that was new in today. In the front a duck Tufted Duck dives for food. Both these species are vegetarian.

A Stock Dove on a roof in Westcroft Walk. This angle does not show the glossy blue/green neck patch especially as this looks to be a scruffy individual. At least the lack of white neck patch makes it clear it is not a Wood Pigeon.

A first winter Black-headed Gull with its plumage well-illustrated.

The middle bird is an adult Black-headed Gull beginning to acquire what is actually a dark brown hood as it comes in to breeding condition. Its acquisition happens with remarkable speed. The adult in the foreground shows no hint of changing as yet. A drake Tufted Duck looks on.

An adult winter Black-headed Gull approaches head-on.

You can almost sense the concentration as this one is about to splash down.

A male Bullfinch to give some colour to the cloudy morning.
