Priorslee Balancing Lake and The Flash

4.0°C > 9.0°C: Fine and clear apart from a band of cloud to the far East. A clam start with a moderate westerly wind developing. Very good visibility.

Bird notes
Best today was a Woodcock seen at 06:30 at the West end. Most of my sightings of this species have been of birds flying in from the fields to the East to drop in to one of the small wooded areas at the West end, spending the day roosting, well-camouflaged against the leaf-litter. Today's bird seemed to be moving between wooded areas though I only saw it very briefly. Bird species #69 for me here this year.

Other bird notes:
- the Gadwall were again hiding under overhanging vegetation. An extra duck noted today: possibly another – to make three pairs – hiding away.
- the same Pochard noted. I did not improve on yesterday's view to get any further with positively identifying its sex.
- *the Great (White) Egret flew in at 06:40.
- a Kingfisher was heard calling at 06:45, presumably at or leaving its North side roost.
- *two Cetti's Warblers noted again.
- a Chiffchaff was calling from the West end reedy area at 06:40. What was likely the same bird was seen skulking in the same general area c.08:45.

The bank of cloud to the East prevented any colour in the sunrise. Note on this end (the West end) the water is still with just a few ripples in the distance. The breeze increased later. Where does the wind go at night? Mr. Google knows: "At night...it [wind] tends to significantly decrease in strength near the ground because the Earth's surface cools rapidly, leading to less convective air movement; this is why nights are often calmer than days". So there.

No mistaking a Great (White) Egret!

With the light shining through the wing it is possible to see how the feathers, held in place by the shafts, overlap so as to lock together.

One of the Cetti's Warblers was determined not to be photographed.

It remained inquisitive enough for me to get another chance.

A Song Thrush searching for morsels.

And now standing up straight. Note the many different shades of brown in the plumage.

This bird had a single white feather in its left wing. I am used to seeing Blackbirds with white feathers in various places but cannot recall seeing this on a Song Thrush before even though they are both part of the thrush (Turdus) family.

Neither Obsidentify nor Google Lens has come up with anything on this beetle on one of the street lamp poles. The problem with beetles is that there are 4000 species in the UK and many of them are small and black! I'll see whether the Shropshire recorder can help.

The Flash: 09:20 – 10:25

When I arrived council workers were on the water in a boat collecting three dead Canada Geese. I was told the geese would be sent to a lab in Shrewsbury for analysis. The worker I spoke to did not know where any result would be published or be available.

The disturbance meant that birds had been moved around somewhat and there were no Cormorants present.

Bird notes:
- a pair of Coots seen mating.
- four Chaffinches were at feeders in Westcroft Walk. I rarely see more than one or two here. No song here as yet.

The Flash and Priorslee Balancing Lake

An aborted start at the lake due to a heavy shower. I tried again later starting at The Flash and still failed to dodge the showers hence the paucity of photos as I kept the camera dry.

Viewing only from the dam-top area.

Bird notes:
- the Gadwall were hiding under overhanging vegetation and there may have been more present.
- what I assume to be the same Pochard had migrated to the dam-end. Here I took a photo of it in good light for a change. It was by no means posing: however some of the feathers on the flanks seemed to be finely banded as if it might be an immature drake. It would be very late in the season for this species to still be in immature plumage. None of my reference books are painted or reproduced in sufficient detail for me to be certain as to its sex. One other observation: in our area it is usual for drakes to significantly outnumber ducks so it would be unusual for a lone duck to be seen, especially such a long-stayer.
- at the later time of my visit today there are usually very few fly-overs. I was therefore surprised to see a loose group of 47 Rooks overhead and even more surprised to see they were flying North and not on their usual roost-dispersal flight-line. Soon afterwards a group of 28 Jackdaws flew outbound. Very odd. The few of each species that flew over later would otherwise have been unremarkable.

As I commented in the notes above I photographed a Pochard in better light. Especially on the right side of the bird the feathers have the fine marking that are seen on drakes. I cannot find any illustration of this species that shows a duck of this species with these marking. That may be a lack of resolution in the reproduction process. If the bird stays a few more weeks the situation may resolve itself.

7.0°C > 9.0°C: Mostly cloudy with an unexpected temporary clearance around sunrise. Rain starting as I departed The Flash. Moderate southerly wind increasing fresh. Very good visibility.

Bird notes
Surprise of the morning was hearing a Chiffchaff calling near the Wesley Brook bridge. While this species over-winters in the UK in very low numbers birds are usually silent after calls cease around late October. In Spring it is usually a warm and sunny day in mid-March that tempts the first song. Calls are unusual in Spring. I have only noted this species here twice previously during Winter (November – February).

Other bird notes:
- the duck Pochard seen again. Did I overlook it in the mist yesterday?
- many more gulls today with c.50 large gulls the first to arrive at c.06:45. At least 40 Black-headed Gulls arrived soon after. Then a tight group of at least 200 more Black-headed Gulls came in low from the West. Some ten minutes later I noted at least 200 in four groups also arriving from the West. I am not positive these were (all?) different birds – I could not see the water at this time and birds often do come and go.
- a Reed Bunting was heard calling from reeds along the South side. This is only my second record of this species here this year. It is usually to be seen in small numbers leaving a roost here: only once last November during this Winter period.

New Bird Species
One addition to the bird species on my site for here in 2025:
68 Chiffchaff

An unexpected and brief break in the clouds led to a sunrise. A quartet of Canada Geese can be seen among Coots on the water. The camera was not doing justice to the colour (I have slightly enhanced the colours here). It has a "sunrise/sunset" setting and I tried that...

...with this unlikely result! I'll stick to tweaking the normal setting as I feel it necessary.

The break in the cloud did not last long.

The duck Pochard is still around and still likes the south-west area alongside the boat ramps. Here she has made friends with one of up to nine Moorhens that feed on the grass.

A not very good photo of a passing Sparrowhawk. The main point to note is the fluffed-out under-tail feathers. This is part of its territorial display. The full display involves male flapping leisurely on slow wingbeats quite unlike is usual quick "flap, flap, glide" flight.

This springtail was on a wall of the Telford Sailing Club HQ. It looks to be a Pogonognathellus longicornis or similar.

A different springtail I noted on one of the street lamp poles. It is the size of the globular springtails but shares the basic shape of the species above.

Snowdrops I found in the grass among trees planted between the football field and the footpath. Whether these are garden escapes or whether they were planted along with the trees I suspect they are cultivars and best recorded as Galanthus sp.

These are flowers of Colt's-foot Tussilago farfara . An unusual plant because the flowers appear before any leaves are visible. The plant spreads vegetatively on rhizomes and is hard to eradicate as even the slightest piece of rhizome left will regenerate. Always early to flower: last year I photographed my first flowers on 16 February.

A drake Tufted Duck: more of a 'sail' than a 'tuft' in the wind. He looks displeased.

Definitely!

Little more than a record shot of my first Great Crested Grebe of the year here. This species is normally present throughout the year in small numbers, typically one or two pairs.

A "sticky bud" of Horse-chestnut Aesculus hippocastanum just splitting to reveal the leaves.

This stunted plant is in a sheltered position and the first to flower. None of the other plants show any sign of flower-stalks as yet.

All numbers possibly under-recorded due to the mist patches.

Bird notes:
- one pair of Canada Geese seen mating
- just one pair of Gadwall.
- a second pair of displaying Great Crested Grebe. Still a lone bird.
- just two Lesser Black-backed Gulls arrived with the first of c.125 Black-headed Gulls but did not stay. No others visited with only a small passage overhead.
- no Grey Heron but what I assume to be the same Great (White) Egret was present some of the time.
- the morning passage of Jackdaws and Rooks had barely started when the mist rolled in and no more could be seen.
- I managed to confirm what I have suspected for some while: there are two Cetti's Warblers here. I was trying to take a photo of one bird skulking in sedges and reeds when a different bird sang.
- the milder conditions tempted four Blackbirds, 13 Song Thrushes, one Goldcrest and one Chaffinch to sing, along with the regular Robins, Wrens, Dunnocks and tits.
- a pair (I assume) of Mistle Thrushes flew out of the south-east area and away across Castle Farm Way. No song was heard, neither did I see or hear this species in the Teece Drive area.

A series of not very good photos of a female (no song) Cetti's Warbler.

This species is an arch-skulker and here trying to hide.

Many sedges in the way here.

Probably peering at me.

Last one. The best sequence I have yet to manage.

A male Dotted Border moth Agriopis marginaria. The female of this species, like many moths active in the winter moths, is flightless albeit with rather larger wings than some other species. The dip in the outer cross-line is shared with the very common Mottled Umber Erranis defoliaria, that species lacking the straight median cross-line. The wing border is not especially 'dotted'.

Even if I were confident about identifying springtails this dew-covered individual would be a challenge. Apart from the moth the only other creature on the street lamp poles pre-dawn.
