Location
Telford sunrise: 08:13
3.0°C > 3.5°C. Overcast with mainly light rain. Light wind, mainly e / NE. Moderate visibility
(153rd visit of the year)
Not much reward for a trudge around in the cold and wet. A Woodcock returning to roost was about the only notable sighting.
Notes
- the geese seen this morning could not be specifically identified in the poor conditions
- the Gadwall were again very flighty and calling and displaying
- poor numbers of gulls. No more than 30 Black-headed Gulls arrived. Most of the rather few large gulls could not be specifically identified in the conditions
- just three moderate-sized groups of Jackdaws but birds to the E were largely beyond visible range. One of the groups had a lone Starling in with it!
- Cetti’s Warbler heard briefly
- 31 Starlings left roosts in the NW reeds. How many groups depends upon low long between birds constitutes a separate bird! I could argue 2 groups; or at least 5
- 12 of the roosting Redwings were seen leaving the traditional roost at the E end of the N side
and
- a Winter Moth on one of the lamps
Counts of birds flying over the lake (in addition to those on / around lake)
- 16 geese sp. (2 groups)
- 29 large gulls
- 266 Jackdaws
- 4 Rooks
- 4 Starlings (2 groups)
- 3 Pied Wagtails yet again
- 1 Redwing
- 9 Greenfinches
- 1 Siskin
- 1 Redpoll
Birds seen leaving roosts around the lake
- Magpies: not counted
- 31 Starlings (about 5 groups)
- 16 Redwings
- 2 Reed Buntings
The counts from the lake area
*** affected by rather poor conditions
- 2 Mute Swans
- 9 (5♂) Gadwall (see notes)
- 1 (1♂) Mallard – flew off
- 10 (8♂) Pochard again
- 52 (27♂) Tufted Ducks
- 2 Grey Herons again
- 10 Great Crested Grebes again
- 21 Moorhens
- 224 Coots
- 1 Woodcock
