Two highlights today
- the first proper summer migrant this morning. I visited the ‘migrant trap’ where the sluice from the lake exits in to the Wesley Brook towards Shifnal. With no sun and the wind blowing directly in to the area I did not hold out much hope. So I was rather surprised to hear and then see a Chiffchaff
- as I was waiting nearby for the bus back home a Meadow Pipit flew over. Sadly I cannot put it on either the lake or The Flash list as yet. I had my first two of the year last Saturday in the Newport area
(41st visit of the year)
Notes
- the Greylag x Canada Goose was only seen in flight but seemed to be the ‘usual’ bird. That said it is over a year since I last logged it.
- full quota of 15 Great Crested Grebes found this morning
- party of finches with at least 8 Redwings feeding in the Ricoh grounds and leaping to & fro to the nearby trees. I identified Goldfinches, Linnets and Siskins but the group was too flighty and too distant to specifically identify them all. At least 7 Linnets and 15 Siskins flew in to the area – and the other 5 Siskins noted as flying over could also have joined them
Counts of birds flying over the lake (in addition to those on / around lake)
- 6 Canada Geese (2 parties)

Cannot recall noticing these before lurking in one of the copses. Primroses: yes. But are they real or garden escapes?
