Trench Lock and Trench Middle Pools

Trench Lock Pool:  16:45 – 17:35
Trench Middle Pool:  16:30 – 16:40 // 17:40 – 17:50

7.0°C > 6.0°C:  Clearing after the deluge. Light NW wind. Very good visibility.

Late visits after all the rain

Trench Lock Pool:  16:45 – 17:35

(46th visit of the year)

Still very quiet. The roadworks that had closed the road to the Blue Pig seem to be complete.

The fishermen reported that Canada Geese and ‘gulls’ were very noisy from the water all last night: none now. Also a Tawny Owl calling from the wooded area near the Blue Pig.

Notes from here:
- The Kingfisher was flying up and down the W side.
- As I was leaving there seemed to be a gathering of Magpies as if there might be a roost in the conifers between the water and the A442.
- A calling Chiffchaff was a surprise.

Birds noted flying over / near here:
- 44 Jackdaws: there are usually up to c.10 birds: this was a larger than usual count.
- c.25 Starlings: hardly a murmuration ...

Counts from the water:
- 6 (6♂) Mallard again
- 2 + 2 Great Crested Grebes
- 3 Moorhens again
- 6 Coots
- 5 Black-headed Gulls: two of these first winter birds
- 1 Kingfisher

Trench Middle Pool:  16:30 – 16:40 // 17:40 – 17:50

(46th visit of the year)

Work to stabilise the N side embankment is not yet complete and no ‘weekend opening’ of the footpath as originally posted.

All the rain had left the water very muddy-looking.

Notes from here:
- The 16 Black-headed Gulls were present at 16:30 but not noted thereafter. Several groups of c.10 > c.30 Black-headed Gulls were passing N overhead later. There was no suggestion that the water was being used as a gull roost so far this winter.

Birds noted flying over / near here:
- >150 Black-headed Gulls

Counts from the water:
- 1 Mute Swan: unringed
- 3 Canada Geese
- 23 (15?♂) Mallard
- 1 all-white feral Mallard-type remains
- 3 (0♂) Tufted Duck
- 1 + 1 Great Crested Grebes
- 17 Moorhens
- 37 Coots
- 16 Black-headed Gulls
