Priorslee Lake: 13:50 – 14:20
The Flash: 13:00 – 13:40
6.0°C > 9.0°C: Cloudy with light drizzle and occasional heavier bursts of rain. Light NW wind. Good visibility
[Sunrise: 06:16 GMT]
Every time I checked the rainfall radar it seemed heavy rain was about to hit. Eventually I got bored and ignored the Covid-19 recommendation as well. Does not augur well for 12 weeks isolation.
Priorslee Lake: 13:50 – 14:20
(52nd visit of the year)
Just a quick look from the E-end lay by. None of the hoped for early Sand Martins.
Notes:
- One of the Mute Swans – did not note which – paid a brief visit to the nest site. Mostly they were together on the water by the sluice. Waiting for hand-outs?
- The two Canada Geese were on the dam-top throughout. Looking for a nest site? Or driven there by the swans?
- Two pairs of Great Crested Grebes asleep on the water. Two other pairs close to and / or at traditional nesting locations.
- The Lesser Black-backed Gull was an adult. It departed while I was present.
- A Skylark could be heard above the traffic noise singing over the fields to the E.
Birds noted flying over / near here:
None
Count of warblers logged (singing birds in brackets)
- 1 (1) Chiffchaffs
Just the one audible from the lay-by.

(51st visit of the year)
Bird notes:
- The adult pen Mute Swans on her nest throughout, arranging the vegetation around her.
- No Black-headed Gulls remain. Gone to their nest sites, some in inland UK reservoirs and lakes; many no doubt to the Continent / Eastern Europe.
- Now three Chiffchaffs singing. All very mobile and probably passing through at the moment.
- It is now several weeks since I heard a Song Thrush here. However a middle of the day visit is not the best time for bird-song.

One of the Chiffchaffs caught in full ‘chiff’ (or ‘chaff’ – who can tell?). Note the pale base to the lower mandible, not shown by Willow Warbler. The song of course is quite different.
Here just about between song. From this angle we see the short and indistinct supercilium.
