Priorslee Lake: 10:15 – 11:15

(244th visit of the year)

Viewing from the Castle Farm Way lay-by and dam-top only

Bird notes:
- A steady trickle of Lesser Black-backed Gulls dropped in to bathe and drink before carrying on.
- Two Pied Wagtails in the Castle Farm Way lay-by were just about the only other birds I noted.

Counts from the lake area:
- *2 Canada Geese
- 2 + 4 (1 brood) Mute Swans
- 5 (3♂) Gadwall still
- 7 (6♂) Mallard
- 2 (1♂) Common Teal still
- 4 (2♂) Pochard
- 99 (42♂) Tufted Duck
- 12 Moorhens
- 186 Coots
- 2 Great Crested Grebes still
- *37 Black-headed Gulls
- 4 Herring Gulls
- *44 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 1 Cormorant

Later.
Nothing noted

Dull conditions are not conducive to great photography. Someone arrived with bread for the birds and I was tempted to at least try a few shots. The Canada Geese were quick to spot the opportunity of food and here is one arriving. Not enough light to 'freeze' many of the photos I am afraid.

Black-headed Gulls were also soon on the case. All of them were adult winter-plumaged birds though this one shows rather more black on the head than is typical at this date.

The heads of these two are more typically marked for this date.

As are these two.

Some second winter birds might show dark spots at the ends of the outer tail feathers. Nothing to see here.

Nor here. The nearer bird does not have black tips to the tail – it is the wing-tip of the bird behind it.

Another typical adult winter bird.

Whereas this individual seems to be coming in to breeding plumage rather early. Or is it moulting out in to pale-headed winter plumage rather late?

A classic first winter Lesser Black-backed Gull briefly joined the fray. Note the almost uniformly dark back and wings; the all-dark tail separated from the almost unmarked upper-tail by a clean crescent shape.

Another view of the same bird showing the all dark bill and head-streaking which is especially pronounced around the eye.
