Priorslee Balancing Lake and The Flash

2.0°C > 3.0°C: The Telford microclimate wins again. Thin medium overcast at home: mist and low cloud at the lake with the mist lifting to give a brief red sunrise, only for low cloud to dominate again. Rain after 09:15 (10:30 it forecast on my app.). Light south-easterly wind. Poor visibility becoming good.

Sunrise: 07:00 GMT

* = a species photographed today

There will be no report for the next few days while, weather permitting, I pursue my aviation pastime.

Priorslee Balancing Lake: 06:00 – 09:10

(44th visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- only one of the Mute Swan cygnets noted. That made several flights including leaving to the West for a while – the first time I have seen either of the cygnets beyond the environs of the water. It soon returned to be further chased by the cob. Where was the other one?
- many of the Black-headed Gulls barely had time to sit on the water before they were off again.
- *today the Cetti's Warbler seemed to make two anti-clockwise circumnavigations of the lake. Either that or there are now two birds.

Counts of birds noted flying over:
- 2 Stock Doves: together
- 28 Wood Pigeons
- 16 Black-headed Gulls
- 3 Herring Gulls
- 5 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 7 Jackdaws
- 3 Rooks
- 2 Pied Wagtails

Counts from the lake area:
- 2 + 1 Mute Swans: see notes
- 5 (3♂) Mallard
- 20 (13♂) Tufted Duck
- 10 Moorhens
- 47 Coots
- Little Grebe heard only
- no Great Crested Grebes
- 108 Black-headed Gulls
- 2 Cormorants: arrived separately
- 1 Grey Heron

Noted on or around the street lamp poles pre-dawn:

Moths:
- *1 Dotted Border Agriopis marginaria

Other things:
- 3 differently-sized springtails

Later:
Nothing noted

The mist began to lift and the appearance of a red sky caught me badly positioned for a photo.

A quick scamper and I managed to grab this shot before the colour faded. Coots are on the water in the foreground.

By Cetti's Warbler standards this is a clear photo! The long tail and dark brown colouration are evident but not much else. This was along the South side. Is this a different bird to the one I usually hear and rarely glimpse along the North side?

Jays are always wary and tend to perch where they can see you but are mostly hidden behind branches.

A Dotted Border Agriopis marginaria. It was under the horizontal part of the street lamp holding the LED array. A specimen with the clearest 'dotted border' I have seen this year.

The Flash: 09:15– 10:00

(46th visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- the cob Mute Swan has stopped chasing the geese and is now trying to persuade last year's cygnets to leave. He seems to split one away from the other three. Whether it is always the same one is impossible to say. Perhaps it is the only male cygnet a therefore more of a threat?
- I have no idea why there were many fewer Coots today. Perhaps they were doing what I should have been doing – sheltering from the rain.
- back in January I noted a female Great Spotted Woodpecker excavating a nest hole in a tree at the top end. Since then I have neither seen nor heard any woodpeckers here (or at the Balancing Lake). Neither have I been able to relocate the tree with the nest hole. I hope it was not one of the trees 'thinned' by council contractors.

Bird(s) noted flying over here:
None

Noted on / around the water:
- 19 Canada Geese
- 2 + 4 Mute Swans
- 2 (1♂) Gadwall
- 25 (17♂) Mallard
- 1 (1♂) all-white feral duck
- 61 (36♂) Tufted Duck
- 10 Moorhens
- 29 Coots
- 3 Black-headed Gulls
- *1 Herring Gull
- *1 Lesser Black-backed Gull

Of note:
Nothing else

Singles of both Herring (on the left) and Lesser Black-backed Gulls were here today. A few black marks in the Herring Gull's tail suggests a third year bird. The solid dark tail band on the Lesser Black-back suggests a second year bird. This is a different bird to that seen yesterday which was an adult.

The Lesser Black-backed Gull rested on the water close to the bank but flew away just as I pressed the shutter (or whatever passes for that on modern cameras). Here it is evident the tail band is not as neat as it appear on a flying bird when the tail feathers are held closed.

Wings wide apart.

As it settles back on the water with wings fully spread note that the inner webs of the inner primaries are pale. On a Herring Gull the whole inner primaries would appear pale, not just the inner webs. Note too that the secondary feathers are not solid black as they often appear to be: they have paler tips and outer fringes.

Priorslee Balancing Lake and The Flash

0.0°C > 2.0°C: A red-sky at dawn with barely broken high level clouds. Mist over the water. Cloud lowered and thickened with rain between c.09:30 and c.09:50. Then brighter with sunny spells. A calm start with increasing southerly breeze to clear the mist. Moderate visibility, good later.

Sunrise: 07:02 GMT

* = a species photographed today

Priorslee Balancing Lake: 06:00 – 09:30

(43rd visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- both resident Mute Swan cygnets were initially seen put to flight by the adults. They were then forced on to the south-west grass with the adults not letting them back in the water. One later escaped its confinement and flew around and I lost sight of it. A third adult visited briefly.
- most of the Tufted Duck left when two presumed trespassers appeared on inflatables.
- very few Jackdaws and Rooks again.
- the Cetti's Warbler seemed to make a complete anti-clockwise circumnavigation of the lake, singing all the while.
- it always happens: after my comment yesterday about lack of Mistle Thrush song recently a pair were in the North side wooded area with one singing and one calling.
- a Bullfinch was heard giving its quiet and unobtrusive song.
- at least 50 Siskins were flying over and around again.

Counts of birds noted flying over:
- *30 Canada Geese: 28 outbound in six groups; a pair inbound
- 2 Feral Pigeons: together
- 2 Stock Doves: together
- 15 Wood Pigeons
- 7 Black-headed Gulls
- 7 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- 11 Jackdaws
- 4 Rooks
- 11 Starlings: two small groups

Counts from the lake area:
- *3 + 2 Mute Swans: see notes
- no Canada Geese
- 9 (6♂) Mallard
- *23 (15♂) Tufted Duck: but see notes
- 7 Moorhens
- 40 Coots
- 2 Great Crested Grebes
- 67 Black-headed Gulls
- 2 Cormorants: arrived separately

Noted on or around the street lamp poles pre-dawn:
All frosted with nothing seen

Noted later:
- *flowers of Early Dog-violet Viola reichenbachiana

A brief gap in the high overcast gave me a chance to photograph the now clearly waning Snow Moon.

Very early as the mist hung over the water. The resident adult Mute Swans are asleep in the foreground.

Definitely "red sky in the morning". Traces of the mist are still visible.

The red tones went further: here tingeing the sky to the West. Frosted grass shows in the foreground.

Canada Geese rarely pass quietly. Two make that point.

Our two Mute Swan cygnets were forced on to the grass by the adults.

This visiting adult Mute Swan was not allowed to stay long.

Full wing-span as it powers away.

Not to be outdone one of our cygnets shows its wing-span as it evades its chasing parent.

Nine Tufted Duck leaving, probably for The Flash and put up by...

... the appearance of these two individuals on the lake. The lake is a private water with only the sailing club and other authorised organisations allowed access. And then only with proper safety protocols in place.

Butter wouldn't melt in its mouth. A Long-tailed Tit gathering lichen to line its nest. It seems that warmer winters are encouraging birds to nest earlier. The dates of the moratorium on hedge cutting may need to be revised.

This I believe to be an Early Dog-violet Viola reichenbachiana

Aircraft of the day. It is an Agusta A109E Power built in 2005. The registration is painted on the cowling below the rotor head and not visible here. Flight Trackers identified it as G-GDSG which is registered to Pendley Aviation LLP. with an address at Luton Airport. It is most likely hangered at the nearby Denham Airfield which is where it was flying from today.

The Flash: 09:35– 10:30

(45th visit of the year)

A man, apparently under contract to the council. was strimming vegetation at the bottom end. He told me that it was "something to do with flood prevention". He agreed it was hard to see how his task was related to flooding. It is no wonder that the UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world.

Bird notes:
- some of the increase in Tufted Duck number due to birds escaping the inflatables on the Balancing Lake.
- *at least 50 Siskins flying around.

Bird(s) noted flying over here:
- *1 Grey Heron

Noted on / around the water:
- 19 Canada Geese
- 2 + 4 Mute Swans
- *2 (1♂) Gadwall
- 21 (14♂) Mallard
- 1 (1♂) all-white feral duck
- 71 (44♂) Tufted Duck
- 11 Moorhens
- 41 Coots
- no Great Crested Grebe
- 2 Black-headed Gulls
- 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull

Of note.
Nothing else

Still here: the drake...

 ...and duck Gadwall.

The over-flying Grey Heron. It showed no interest in the water. It is several weeks since I last noted one here.

Another ground shot of a Collared Dove.

I have been trying for a flight shot for ages but they take off at such speed it is difficult to catch them.

You can still sing with a muddy bill as this Song Thrush demonstrates.

Too close on a murky morning. There were at least 50 Siskins in three Alder trees, jumping about and attacking the cones. A male here, identified by the black crown. Whether the males are just more conspicuous or whether they really do vastly outnumber the females in these flocks is unclear.

Priorslee Balancing Lake and The Flash

1.0°C > 5.0°C: Scattered cloud early with only broken cloud later. Keen northerly wind. Very good visibility.

Sunrise: 07:05 GMT

* = a species photographed today

Priorslee Balancing Lake: 06:05 – 09:20

(42nd visit of the year)

Highlight today was a party of 39 Golden Plover that flew fast West at 07:45. This is a species I do not see here every year (I did not see any last year). When I do see them they are usually in large groups flying in very characteristic formation, high above fields far to the East. I have once seen a single bird on the south-west grass amongst Lapwings (Lapwings: those were the days). I have only occasionally seen flocks overhead. My 64th bird species here this year

Other bird notes:
- both adult Mute Swans were chasing the only cygnet I noted. It either flew away without my noticing or went and hid in the reeds.
- *two Great Crested Grebes cleared paired and touring their estate.
- very few Jackdaws or Rooks passing and the few seen were at extreme range.
- two *Mistle Thrushes were noted on the football field. Strangely I have not recorded this species singing since 2 January. I heard it singing in both November and December and I suppose it paired up and established its territory early.
- at least 50 Siskins flying over and around with some or all of these heard later in trees near the Teece Drive gate.
- two Reed Buntings singing today.

Counts of birds noted flying over:
- 8 Canada Geese: six flew South together; a pair inbound
- 3 Greylag Geese: a single and pair outbound
- 7 Goosander: flew West 06:45
- 18 Wood Pigeons
- 39 Golden Plover as highlighted
- 1 Herring Gull
- 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull
- 5 Cormorants: a trio and a duo
- 6 Jackdaws
- 1 Rook
- 7 Redwings
- 1 Greenfinch

Counts from the lake area:
- 2 + 1 Mute Swans
- 3 Canada Geese: duo and single
- 5 (3♂) Mallard
- 27 (17♂) Tufted Duck
- 7 Moorhens
- 36 Coots
- 1 Little Grebe: heard only
- *2 Great Crested Grebes
- c.110 Black-headed Gulls
- 1 Herring Gull
- 4 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
- *3 Cormorants: arrived separately; one departed again

Noted on or around the street lamp poles pre-dawn:
A cold breeze on the lamp poles and just:

Spider:
- *1 Nursery Web Spider Pisaura mirabilis

Later.
Nothing of note

The (just) waning Snow Moon. I still can't see the moon lander...

The pair of punk Great Crested Grebes patrolling the lake.

One of the three Cormorants that arrived separately was an adult – this one showing breeding conditions white neck plumes and, just visible, a white thigh-patch.

One of a pair of Mistle Thrushes searching for food on the football field. The spots on this species are more like blotches than they are on the smaller Song Thrush. Another distinction seen here is the pale fringes on several of the feather tracts. The Song Thrush lacks pale fringes.

The sailing club employed contractors late last year to cut weed growing in the lake. The cut weed was dumped in piles on the bank at various locations. These are now rotten and stinking heaps that attract flies which in turn have attracted this Grey Wagtail.

There is no sign of a dark throat on this bird so it seems it is a female. I think a first year male would be showing some black by now. Older females can also have black throats.

The Nursery Web Spider Pisaura mirabilis on a street lamp pole pre-dawn stayed there allowing me a better photo later.

Plane of the day. This is a 2017-build Tecnam P2006T registered to 3GRComm Ltd. of Hereford. Built near Naples in Italy this twin-engined aircraft seats just four (including the pilot). As such it is unlike any other aircraft currently available. The aircraft operates out of Gloucestershire Airport (formerly known as Staverton). The aircraft's high wing and relatively low-power engines apparently provide a stable platform for its survey tasks using on-board lasers.

The Flash: 09:25– 10:25

(44th visit of the year)

Bird notes:
- the pair of Gadwall briefly appeared alongside sedges and then retreated in to cover.
- more small groups of *Siskins flying around.

Bird(s) noted flying over here:
None

Noted on / around the water:
- *25 Canada Geese
- 2 + 4 Mute Swans
- 2 (1♂) Gadwall: see notes
- 20 (14♂) Mallard
- 1 (1♂) all-white feral duck
- *36 (19♂) Tufted Duck
- 8 Moorhens
- *41 Coots
- 1 Great Crested Grebe
- *11 Black-headed Gulls

Of note.
Nothing else.

A duck Tufted Duck looking fierce as usual. She seems to have a random selection of pale, even white, feathers. She was the only tufty close by one of the bridges and had learnt that when food is available she can dive for any that sinks before the geese, swans, Coots and gulls can snatch it from the surface.

Well: that's not very friendly.

The Coot has food. The Black-headed Gulls want to snatch it.

Three against one. The gull at the top is a first year. The closest gull is an adult. The middle bird shows some black speckling on the leading edge of the wing at the bend and I think that means it is a second year bird, not quite in full adult plumage.

Gulls have quick reactions. An adult Black-headed Gull snatches food from in front of a Canada Goose.

Here is another adult Black-headed Gull still with a few white marks in the dark hood. It is likely a few dark feathers of the breeding plumage have yet to grow fully. When they do so they will cover the white patches. Note too the dark-tipped bill is not so plum-red as a full adult.

This is more like a full adult, albeit still with some white speckling on the throat.

The only Siskin, a male, that paused in view. It makes a change to see one the right way up.

Of note.
Nothing else

I mentioned yesterday that the cob Mute Swan had started chasing the geese. He has singled out one of the Canadas here.

No mistaking his intention.

This goose is making a noisy escape.

A picture of contentment as the duck Mallard suns herself on a roof.

"I wonder if there is anyone at home". A Great Tit surveys a possible nest site. Although the usual Nuthatches inspected this hole last year and were seen clearing detritus I do not think they nested. So the Great Tit may be in with a chance. Note the King Alfred's Cakes Daldinia concentrica alongside.

"I wonder?"

"Nothing to see in there".

 A quizzical Long-tailed Tit.

I needed this friendly Robin to brighten up the misty start.

And this one.

A Goldfinch attacking the Alder cones. This bird was not part of the flock of c.50 Siskins and Goldfinches flying around.
